History
[edit]Nīgrande is an ancient populated area in the Lithuanian border area. Around 1500, Johanam Pīlem arrived in the Nīgrandes area, who created a number of manor, Nīgrandi, Dzirnas and Meldzeri. On the shore of Venta, as economic activity developed, a village developed which gained market rights in 1553. It was called Pelesmiestu (Pila, Pilesme).[2] There were around 300 people living in the mould and dealing with crafts and border trade. In 1656, Pelesmiests acquired city rights. In time, the swore went down and added it to Niegranden's manor in 1754. During the Soviets, Nīgrande was the center of the “Straume” colchhose (later the “Nīgrande” intercolhose association). There is a parish administration, a elementary school, a kindergarten, a library, a Lutheran church (the first wooden church was built in 1663; a wall church from 1775).
The Soviet missile base was located north-west of Nygreat in the woods along the Skrunda Road until the Soviet army was removed (1 st Divisional positions of the 29 th Missile Division).[3]
