Bohumír Rakušan (22. května 1900, Skuteč – 27. srpna 1969, Praha) was a Czechoslovak pharmaceutist, head of RTN research. He focused on the treatment of cancer and other chronic diseases using tissue extracts (animal and plant) preparations.

Early-years and studies

Bohumír Rakušan was born in Skuteč in Bohemia, into the family of Vincenc Rakusan (1860–1923) and Františka, born Jadrná (1866– ??).

1930–1935

In the journal "Czechoslovak Pharmacy" he published the work "Cognition of crust of the boxus sempervirens". In order to gain further experience, he continued his studies with Prof. J. Křepelka, where he worked on the topic of forensic chemistry. He submitted a dissertation called Volumetric determination of small amounts of arsenic.

EKO, ad 1935

He became a partner in the EKO Ph. Mr. Emanuel Kolar, the new company "Eco, chemical-pharmaceutical factory Dr. Mr. Bohumir Rakusan and co."

He focused on the search and isolation of active substances or their complexes from animal or plant material. He tried to extract substances from these materials that could affect, stop or eliminate cancer tissue without damaging healthy tissue.

RTN

Under the leadership of Bohumir Rakusan, the RTN team was established in the EKO factory (Bohumir Austrian, Jaroslav Fanta, Osvald Zicha, Karel Zicha, Gabriel Urbanek, Alois Vystrcil, Bedrich Dolezel). In vitro tests have been performed with many RTN preparations, but animal tests were soon discontinued after finding that they were not conclusive due to the difference in animal metabolism from human metabolism. Therefore, clinical trials were conducted directly. The results were very promising and were published in professional journals (Příspěvek k bádání o tumorech. I. část. / Příspěvek k bádání a nádorech. II. část.) All preparations have been shown to be non-toxic and free from undesirable side effects. Some of the many RTN tissue preparations have been named and trademarks have been registered (RTN33=RETISIN lat. retis - network = tissue preparations, RTN102=LYASTIN, RTN121=SILEXIL).

Znárodnění 1948

In February there was a second wave of nationalization in post-war Czechoslovakia. The EKO factory was nationalized. All movable and immovable property, research and documentation of the Eko were seized.

After 1948 Biogena prepared selected preparations for transfer to industrial production and transferred all rights and trademarks to the national pharmaceutical company SPOFA and five RTN preparations were introduced into the production (Floristen mitte, Floristen Forte, Silexil, Retisin, Lyastin).

Continuation of research after his death

Muc. Bedřich Doležel, together with PhDr. Zdeněk Rejdák (Imuregen) and Ing. František Andrs, CSc (Juwital), [patent application 1981-5343 Doležel, Rejdák, Urbanek].

Research funded by the Ministry of Defense of the Czech Republic at the University of Defense in 2019, reports that the study demonstrated a direct influence on viability of the tumor cell line and a cytostatic/cytotoxic effect of the bovine tissue extract after 72h. of cultivation while leaving non-tumor NHLF cell line unaffected. The extract also significantly affected the viability of irradiated tumor cell line compared to non-tumor irradiated counterparts. In addition to the cytotoxic effect, the extract slightly modified the generation time of the cells and substantial differences between the effects on tumor and non-tumor cell lines were observed.
