Piere Enume was the official that famously allowed Diego Maradona's "Hand Of God" goal (versus England in the 1986 World Cup Quarter Final) stand. He was born in Yaounde, Cameroon on 26th April 1947 and is currently working as a leading FIFA aide in Africa. A dynamic midfielder, Enume moved to France to pursue his footballing dream and signed for Ligue 1 side Saint Etienne at the tender age of 19. He graduated through the ranks and earned his first call up to Boubacar Barry's Cameroon squad for a friendly against Estonia. At the age of 23 and with 14 international caps to his name, Enume made the move to illustrious Rotherham United in Northern England for a then club record fee of £5,000. He spent five seasons at Millmoor, his highlight being a hat-trick in the 5-0 demolition of near neighbours Halifax Town in the 1971-72 season. Enume spent his final season at Rotherham on the sidelines after breaking a leg in a collision with Tottenham keeper Pat Jennings in an FA Cup tie. He did however continue plying his trade in the lower levels of English football, having short spells at Blyth Spartans, Torquay United and Bamber Bridge. Enume returned to France for a final swansong, spending the 1978-79 season with Nantes in a player-coach capacity. It was looking as if Enume was destined for a career in coaching yet after returning home to Cameroon in late 1979, he enrolled on a FIFA recognised refereeing course. Within 3 years Enume was officiating in Cameroon's top league before gaining his licence to referee African international matches in 1983, his first being Algeria's 4-1 mauling at the hands of Senegal. Having sufficiently impressed on the big stage over the following 2 years, Enume was named as the sole African referee for the 1986 World Cup to be held in Mexico. He presided over the group games between Belgium and Yugoslavia and hosts Mexico versus Italy. It is however, the infamous quarter final between England and Argentina that his career will be remembered for. Enume has recently become one of a select few referees of yesteryear chosen to feature in Konami's Pro Evolution Soccer series.
