Kennett High School is located in North Conway, New Hampshire at 409 Eagle's Way. There is a strong music department and a dance and theatre department was instated in for the 2007-2008 year in the newly built high school (opened for 2007-2008). There are two school districts (SAU#9 and SAU#13) that feed into the regional high school covering 10 towns. The high school feeds from three middles schools, which feed from 14 elementary schools. The music department is the largest performing arts department at Kennett High School. The size ranges from 70-125 students per year in a high school of approximately 950 students. The dance department has approximately 50 students and the theatre department has approximately 25 students.

I. Music

A. Ensembles

Instrumental

There are numerous instrumental groups at Kennett High School. Symphonic Band, which performs traditional band music, is open to everyone and auditions are for seating purposes only. It rehearses during school and there is an after school session for those who can not fit the class into the school schedule. Marching/Pep Band plays at Football and Basketball Games during their respective seasons. The marching band also performs in numerous parades and local events in the Mount Washington Valley. The stage band is an audition ensemble that plays jazz, rock, and pop music. Auditions are in the spring for the following year. There are five saxophone seats (1st and 2nd alto, 1st and 2nd tenor, and baritone), four or five trumpet seats (1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, the 5th person sometimes doubles on 4th or is familiar with all the parts in case of an absence in the section), four or five trombone seats (see trumpet), and a rhythm section (piano, bass, guitar, drum kit, and auxiliary). The stage band meets one night a week for several hours and travels every year. The last three instrumental music ensembles are the Odds & Ends jazz combo (started 2004-2005), Drumline (became individual group in 2007-2008) and a rock band (started 2008-2009), all of which are student run. The drumline is known about the school and community as moral raisers and performers. The also help with the Special Olympics.

Choral

The are two major choral groups at Kennett High School. The first is Concert Choir, an open group with auditions for the purpose of voice part placement only. This class is offered during school an after school for people who can not fit chorus into their regular school schedules. The second major choral ensemble is the Select Choir. Select Choir is by audition only and the group size varies from 10 to 25 students per year. It meets one night a week for several hours and travels every year. There are also two student run ensembles, men's choir and women's choir. The chorus also provide an opportunity for student instrumental accompanists.

B. Faculty

Current Faculty

The current faculty consists of Therese Davison and Holly Anderson. Davison directs the instrumental music ensembles, and teaches the guitar, world cultures, and theory classes. Anderson directs the choral ensembles and teaches song writing

E. Department Awards

Senior Awards

Every spring, the faculty of the music department gives awards to the deserving seniors. The most prominent two are The National Band Director's Award and The National Choral Director's Award as they go to an outstanding musician and leader. There are three total choral awards, the National Choral Director's Award, the Kennett High School Choral Award (a "spirit" award), and the National School Choral Award. The major band awards are The National Band Director's Award, the John Philip Sousa Award, the Ernie Mills Low Brass Award, and the Louis Armstrong Jazz Award. There are several department wide awards including the Rotary Millman Award.

Awards Points

There is an awards point system to encourage service within the music department. An awards point equals six hours of service. There are different levels of achievement: a certificate (3 points), a pin (7 points), a Kennett Varsity letter (10 points), a medal (20 points), and the Crystal Eagle (30 points). Only seniors can receive the Crystal Eagle. If 30 points is achieved before senior year, then a Pewter Pen is awarded.

F. Other Classes

There are several classes offered by the KHS Music Department outside of band and chorus ensembles. There are guitar classes that have several levels from a beginner introduction to more advanced classes. Theory is offered on occasion as well as song writing, a class that covers basic music theory and focuses on notation. The music department also integrates with the social studies department to explore music in other world cultures.

II. Dance

A. Dance Team

The dance team is by audition only and consists of approximately 15 students. The main focus is hip hop although all styles are explored including modern, lyrical, country, and jazz.

B. Classes

The current classes are unlevelled Modern Dance Forms and Contemporary Dance. Due to the success of this new program, more classes and levels will be offered soon.

C. Faculty

The dance instructor is Holly Fougere. She is assisted in running the dance team by Julie Anderson.

III. Theatre

A. Classes

There are basic theatre and acting classes currently being offered.

B. Productions/Drama Club

The Drama Club produces two full-scale productions a year. They perform a play or small musical in the fall and a musical in the spring.

C. Faculty

The theatre classes are taught by Holly Anderson and David Freedman. Anderson and outside guests direct and produce the Drama Club productions.
