Mary Bukoh is a Singaporean media personality and DJ, currently co-hosting the evening drive-time show on Love 97.2FM, a radio station operated by Mediacorp. After graduating from Nanyang Technological University with a Second Upper Honours degree in Accountancy, Bukoh worked as an auditor before transitioning to a career in media. [1] She started her media career as a producer and presenter for YES 933, a Singaporean Mandarin-language radio station, before moving to Capital 958[2] , a news and information station, and finally to Radio Love 972 in 2012.[3] Bukoh is possibly the first radio DJ in recent years to have worked on the top three radio stations in Singapore.
Besides her work in radio, Bukoh has also worked as a television host and actress, and is proficient in both English and Mandarin. She has hosted a variety of events, including corporate functions, media launches, press conferences, and charity shows.
Surname[edit]
Mary Bukoh's surname is not a combination of her father's and mother's surnames.
According to a family legend cited by a Sin Chew Daily article,[4] Mary's ancestor, Mr. Koh (许姓), was adopted by a relative, Mr. Bu (巫姓), many years ago. In gratitude for his adoption, Mr. Koh changed his surname to Bukoh.
Career[edit]
Bukoh worked as an auditor after graduating with Second Upper Honours in Accountancy from Nanyang Technological University.[5] She left her auditor profession to become a producer/presenter with YES 933, a Mandarin radio station owned by Mediacorp in Singapore.
Bukoh attended Raffles Girls’ School, Raffles Junior College, and Nanyang Technological University where she graduated with Second Upper Honours in Accountancy.[6] She made the switch from an auditor to a producer/presenter with Mediacorp’s Chinese radio station YES 933 in 1997.
In 2005, the Speak Good English Movement (SGEM) was launched in Singapore to encourage Singaporeans to use Standard English as a means of effective communication. The initiative was supported by various organizations, including government agencies, media outlets, and educational institutions. As part of the campaign, SGEM organized a series of events and activities aimed at promoting the use of Standard English. One such event was the "Good English Awards," which recognized individuals and organizations for their efforts in using good English. Bukoh Mary, a radio DJ at YES 933, was one of the recipients of the award in 2005. According to SGEM, Bukoh Mary was recognized for her "efforts in encouraging the use of good English in the media industry and among young people." As a radio DJ, she was noted for using Standard English in her broadcasts and for promoting good English language habits among her listeners.[7]
She loves traveling and in 2007, published the book '自游自载' (meaning 'Self-Driving and Self-Recording') to share her travel experiences with her audience.[8]
She moved on to Capital 958, a news and info station in 2012.[9] According to Chan Brothers Travel (n.d.), Bukoh Mary was part of the "Mesmerising Kyushu" tour as a celebrity DJ for CAPITAL 958FM.[10]
In August 2017, she moved to Love 972, being the first radio DJ in recent years to be on the top 3 radio stations in Singapore.
The 11th National Day Sing-along organised by The Singapore Federation of Chinese Clan Associations (SFCCA) on July 30th, 2017, at Toa Payoh HDB Hub Mall Square, had close to 1500 participants and had been hosted by emcees Gan Yu Thian, Mary Bukoh and Kenneth Kong.[11]
According to the Ministry of National Development Singapore, Bukoh was invited to host the SG Farmers’ Market in Feb 2018[12][13]
In August 2018, Bukoh was one of the emcees for the 14th National Day SingAlongs event held at Singapore Chinese Cultural Centre.[14]
In 2020, the Singapore Federation of Chinese Clan Associations (SFCCA) and Singapore Chinese Cultural Centre (SCCC) hosted an online sing-along event on National Day, which was a first for the annual event due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The event featured crowd favorites such as "Home," "The Stream That Flows Forever," and "Voices From My Heart" for participants to sing in unison from the safety of their homes. Local radio DJs Phua Kia Peow and Bukoh Mary hosted a series of interactive games, while President Halimah Yacob made a special guest appearance and delivered a message to the participants.[15]
In 2022, Mary Bukoh performed in the stand-up comedy show, "Love 972 Stand-up Comedy Show" at the Capitol Theatre, alongside other comedians. The show was organised by the radio station, Love 972, and received positive reviews from audiences.[16]
