Outline[edit]

A comparison of the outlines for Washington, DC and Albany, New York:

Anything in italics I added as a suggestion. Anything with a strike is something I'm suggesting we get rid of as a stand-alone section and incorporate elsewhere or get rid of. Needless to say, we need to cut some subsections and even some major sections. The outline is currently too long. Comments? upstateNYer 22:32, 23 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I have a few topics we might want to tackle about what sections we should/shouldnt have, I think deciding the sections and subsections now is a good place to start-
  • I've never been comfortable with notable people sections mostly because controversy about how to "rank" the people, alphabetically or by notability and if by notability do you do it on how universally they are known or on how important they were in Albany history in particular. So you could get either Florence Auer with top billing (who?!), or Andy Rooney (did/does he really live within the city borders though?), or Erastus Corning 2nd (many, if not ALL historians would say Nelson Rockefeller did more to Albany than our most famous mayor, but does living in the governor's mansion really count as being a notable resident?) depending on criteria. And of course there was the whole Rachel Ray controversy at Glens Falls, New York about what makes a "famous resident" a resident in the first place (just being born in a hospital in the city or significant amount of time living there?) and whether being famous in general is enough or if you had to contribute significantly to the history of your city in particular. On the other hand it is a source of pride to say "this person in national or international history is from here even if they didnt actually DO anything HERE"; Herman Melville for example... yea he lived in Albany for a short while with his brother... Albany is mentioned in Moby Dick... but he did his major work in Troy and other places, not really did much in Albany. Without a notable resident section would anyone know he lived in Albany from this article?
    • It goes; no other FAs for cities have this. Just incorporate into the body if there are exceptionally notable people. upstateNYer 16:26, 25 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  • Albany and environs ranked against other cities... probably scrap that one? Most could find a home in either the lede, history, culture, or economy section as appropriate.
  • Save the recreational areas section as a subsection under the cityscape.
    • Sounds good; I don't disagree with you here. upstateNYer 16:26, 25 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  • Obviously we probably dont need to copy DC in having a "federal representation" subsection, but everything else with the ordering and names looks good I think we should stick with theirs unless anything is caused controversy at their GA. I think Capital District mirrors it pretty closely already as well. And that's an article that we can use as a start for several of our sections by just pulling over the relevant info and leaving out the stuff outside of Albany, then expand them with more details that would have been left out at the NYCD article for lack of space.Camelbinky (talk) 19:07, 24 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Infobox change[edit]

I think we should move to using {{Infobox settlement}} instead of {{Geobox}}. I've been switching over the Rensselaer County ones to infobox too. I wish they would just pick one and delete the other, though, so we didn't have to worry. Are you interested in tackling this? upstateNYer 16:26, 25 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Geobox is newer and in my opinion the better of the two with better features. I just recently did the changing of all Albany County ones to geobox. I had once wanted to change Troy from Geobox to Infobox and had I was slapped down and then I believe JulianColton was nice enough to inform me why exactly geobox was better and why he had put it there to begin with. I believe the conversation is still on the Troy page or archived. I guess you were able to change it without any trouble though. For now I dont see the problem in having all Albany County articles as Geoboxes and then Rensselaer County as infobox till we decide something (feel free to change N. and E. Greenbush and city of Rensselaer as they are Geoboxes).Camelbinky (talk) 19:33, 25 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Talk:Troy, New York/Archives/2012#Geobox and it was User:Daniel Case who originally had the Geobox put on the Troy article.Camelbinky (talk) 19:35, 25 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Gotcha. Didn't know that. Good to know. upstateNYer 20:04, 25 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
