We don't "just use the band's genre, alternative" for three reasons:

1) Wikipedia says what independent reliable sources say. The sources give multiple genres.

2) The sources say the band is multiple genres (see R.E.M.), not just alternative rock.

3) If, for example, we just used the artist's genre, we would end up saying some of the songs on Sting's If on a Winter's Night... are rock/pop/new wave/post-punk/ska/reggae/jazz/world when some of them are classical. - SummerPhDv2.0 22:30, 7 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
