Villages

All of these are separate settlements and are described as villages[1][2][3][4] and they're separated from the city by rural land. Cults (Scotland) should redirect to the DAB because Cults, Fife is also in Scotland. Also Balmossie is in Dundee not Angus[5], the boundary is to the north. Hello! Cults, Milltimber and Peterculter, like so many other suburbs of Aberdeen, were once separate villages, but have long ago been absorbed into the expanding built-up area of the city. Whilst you will still see the word "village" used by shops and estate agents to create an air of desirability based on nostalgia, "suburb" is a much more accurate description suitable for Wikipedia, which is supposed to be an encyclopedia, not a promotional guide. Next time you drive (or take the bus) along North Deeside Road from the city through Cults, Bieldside and Milltimber to Culter, take note of how you never leave the built-up area, and that the speed limit remains 30mph the whole way. The odd patch of parkland doesn't count as rural. In the Kingswells direction the situation is slightly different. The speed limit becomes 40mph from Hazlehead, but there's still no rural separation. Kingswells comprises modern housing developments, industrial estates, business parks, the new football stadium development, all much better characterised as "suburban" than "village". If anywhere within Aberdeen could be described as a village it would be places like Balgownie, Footdee/Fittie, Torry and Cove Bay, places that still have a distinct sense of their own identity, but these too have become part of the wider conurbation and are still better described as suburbs. I would point out to you that whoever wrote these articles in the first place no doubt carefully chose their descriptive words, and it is unwise to come along at this late stage and arbitrarily change a few of them without consensus.

As for Balmossie, it is true that Balmossie Farm is within Dundee, but Balmossie redirects to the railway station, which is in Monifieth, Angus. The boundary passes to the west of the station then runs up the centre of South Balmossie Street and North Balmossie Street. In fact I'm not sure a railway station counts as a populated place, so it would probably be best not to add any such category. --188.28.158.163 (talk) 13:06, 23 July 2020 (UTC)

I would hardly say Cults, Milltimber and Peterculter are part of the built-up area. The Gazetteer for Scotland which is an encyclopedia uses "village" for them but uses "suburb" for Mannofield[6] for example. Yes these aren't far from being part of the built-up area but they aren't really yet. "Suburb" should usually only be used when the place is unquestionably part of the larger settlement not merely almost part of it. Crouch, Swale (talk) 16:26, 23 July 2020 (UTC)
