Gege's gender

[edit]

Gege Akutami is a confirmed male. The ambiguity in Japanese pronouns come from him using the more more gender-neutral pronoun "watashi" instead of "boku" which is more masculine. This caused some confusion in Japan as well as to his gender due to his switch from "boku" to "watashi", however it's common for Japanese men to drop "boku" in favor of "watashi" as they get older because it sounds more professional, and Gege is 32. He is not trans or nonbinary or a woman. On the Mando Kobayashi interview Gege stated he used to use boku, but switched to watashi when he got older to sound more mature. He's called himself a younger brother before. There is absolutely no confusion about Gege Akutami's gender. I'll be changing it once more and if anyone wants to edit it, please refer to this post before doing so. 68.52.91.85 (talk) 01:56, 29 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

do you have a reliable source for your assertion? Augmented Seventh (talk) 02:03, 29 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
You can find clips of Gege's interview with Mando Kobayashi where he does not reveal his face(manga artists tend to be private) but we hear his masculine voice clearly and can see his hands. Also at the end of Vol. 2 where he says he is a younger brother. You can find plenty of clips from the interview, or the whole thing if you speak Japanese. Out of consideration for time, I'll just post the translation notes some Redditor posted.
"Gege is male, and was surprised when people came up with theories that he was female (he thinks it’s because he switched from using typically masculine pronouns(boku) to using gender neutral/associated with feminine pronouns (watashi) to seem more adult and a member of society; the host thought it was the way that he depicted female characters, I thought it was the female avatar he gave himself in one of his one shots)
Gege gained interest in drawing manga in elementary, when he met girls in his class who read manga like he did and also drew (here the host expressed astonishment that he had a harem at such a young age). Gege's first manga that he read was Bleach when he was in elementary grade 4; his older brother had magazines which Gege sneakily read (because he would have been 'killed' if his brother had caught him), and Bleach had just come out when he started reading."
This tracks with the references to Bleach being an inspiration which are already on the wiki. There are actually tons of translation notes of the interview more or less saying the same thing. The only real reason there's any confusion at all is because of how private Gege is - we don't even know his face. But he's definitely a man. 68.52.91.85 (talk) 03:10, 29 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
That's some solid research. you seem quite knowledgeable on this topic.
however, the claims need to come from various reliable sources, as per wikipedia policy on sources.
otherwise, it's reverted based on Original Researc if you could hunt those sources down and add them to the article, that would be swell.

While the scholarly sources regarding Gege's gender are a bit dry since most of it comes from the paid access Mando Kobayashi interview, inherently limiting most information to the fans kind enough to translate clips of it and take notes, there are at least two articles which more or less state Akutami's gender.
https://www.sportskeeda.com/anime/why-gege-akutami-hide-face-jujutsu-kaisen-mangaka-s-choice-explored This one covers Gege's anonymity and states he's confirmed to be a man, and this: https://www.cbr.com/gege-akutami-jjk-creator-fun-facts-trivia/ which *does* refer to Gege as 'they' but also brings up that Gege, who had a masculine voice, stated he at one point attended an all-boys private school. I think there is, between being able to hear his voice, see his hands, have him state he went to an all-boys private school and is a younger brother, veritable evidence beyond a reasonable doubt that the author of Jujutsu Kaisen is male. Also here is the volume extras where he states he's a younger brother. https://www.reddit.com/r/JuJutsuKaisen/comments/kwmwdy/gege_akutami_stories_with_meguminobarayuji/
I'll omit the latter one from the sourcing since Reddit is hardly peer-reviewed but in all this should objectively quash any confusion regarding Akutami's gender. 68.52.91.85 (talk) 15:09, 29 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
