Catch vs kill
[edit]Hi. You can catch a whale without killing it and kill a whale without catching it. For example, a ship could find a dead whale killed by another vessel. Or it could kill a whale but it could sink. Thus the whale would be dead but not caught. This is why the terms "take" and "caught" are used instead of "kill".
