Birdhouse In Your Soul

[edit]

Hi! Because I've reverted your edit to Birdhouse in Your Soul again, I wanted to explain more clearly what the deal is there (lest we end up in some sort of edit war). So, Wikiproject Songs is a group of people who have written some guidelines on how to write articles for songs that serve the encyclopedia well. Specifically, they advise that cover versions of songs should only be included in articles if the rendition is discussed by a reliable source, showing that it is noteworthy in its own right. Merely appearing in an album track listing, a discography, etc., is not sufficient to show that a cover version is noteworthy[...]. In this case, though a citation to the Youtube video is sufficient to demonstrate that the cover truly does exist, this unfortunately doesn't mean it should be documented on Wikipedia; the trouble is that popular songs tend to get a lot of covers, which would mean a lot of writing and effort if we wanted to include them all, when for the most part they're not relevant to an encyclopedia article about the song. The requirement that covers be described in some secondary reliable source helps limit things to what readers will be interested in hearing about and saves editors from having to write and maintain long lists of cover versions. This general idea applies in a lot of places on Wikipedia; if some external source decided it was worthwhile to cover something, then it might be good for us to write about it too, and if not, it probably isn't that important.

(Though I must admit I do find it interesting personally that Neil Cicierega made a cover of the song while he was a kid, those who are not already fans of his probably won't be so interested to hear it ;))

Also, if you want to edit more in the future, you might like to make an account (or log in if you already have one) - not required by any means, but it makes it easier to recieve notifications and such. Good luck with everything! twotwos (talk) 06:58, 16 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi! I'm the anonymous user who made the latest cover version edits.
Thank you for explaining to me why my contribution was removed, I completely understand now. I now just made an account because of your suggestion and I hope I can get more involved in the Wikipedia community! I'm very new to this type of stuff so thank you for being so understanding.
I'm just a very big Neil Cicierega fan and thought it would be neat to edit a Wiki page. I'll make sure to read tutorials on editing and look over the rules.
Thank you and have a good day! :) MegaNerdSauce (talk) 22:52, 17 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, welcome! I'll let you go, but one point of encouragement: don't worry too much about making mistakes. It's possible to spend a great deal of time reading the manual of style, guidelines, policy pages, etc, but so long as you're doing your best to improve the encyclopedia, nobody will really fault you for making edits that are reverted sometimes. You can honestly skim-read the Five Pillars and go from there. It's more fun to learn by doing, really. twotwos (talk) 04:29, 18 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
