Malta Labour Movement (1978-1992)

Hi there! I saw your edit on the Malta Labour Party article where you listed the national affiliation as "Malta Labour Movement (1978-1992)". I had never heard of this before and got a bit curious. I tried searching for the term both in Maltese and English and couldn't find anything about it.

On 21st May 1978, the General Workers Union and the Malta Labour Party formed a coalition/national front referred to as the "Moviment tal-Haddiema" (Malta Labour Movement) whereby membership of one organisation would be treated as membership of the other, the two entities were statutorily fused, and GWU delegates would have a vote in the Labour Party party conference. The GWU was also entitled to take part in cabinet meetings. This aimed to both give the largest trade union (and thus the working class) a direct say in governing, and to indirectly discourage it from organising any strikes unless absolutely necessary in order to maintain industrial stability. This lasted until 1992 (after the election) when it was agreed to end this arrangement that was now redundant as the labour party was no longer the governing party. 92.251.53.45 (talk) 11:11, 11 June 2023 (UTC)
