Spam advertising[edit]

Please stop using Wikipedia to promote your non-notable personal blog website as you did on Bangor, County Down. Wikipedia is not a directory of links. If you continue to promote your personal website you will be blocked from editing. Canterbury Tail talk 01:25, 28 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Canterbury Tail. What was currently there was as a website in Chinese called Bangor-Local.com or something. And what the hell is this: https://web.archive.org/web/20080210010402/http://www.culturenorthernireland.org/town_Home.aspx?co=7&to=129&ca=0&sca=0&navID=1

The Bangor NI site is no more than 1-month old and already it has more comprehensive and 10 times better imagery than any website, including those run by local govt. agencies, such as https://www.bangorni.com/north-down-coastal-path-bangor-to-holywood/. Did you even look at anything within the website? Check out these below as again they are more comprehensive (and engaging) than the actual North Down Museum Website. Written by a former Alderman and Mayor and current member of the Historical Society and many more local heritage societies in Bangor.

https://www.bangorni.com/history-of-bangor-northern-ireland/ https://www.bangorni.com/bangor-museum-down-northern-ireland/

I have no problem that my site has not been included my own site to this list. But I suggest removing the shite that continues to be there before insulting something you are clueless about. You ginormous non-notable twat.

Allan

If you continue with edits like that, you're not likely going to be editing on Wikipedia for very long. Comment on content not editors. Calling other editors names and making personal attacks as above will just lead to a block.
Please stop attacking other editors. If you continue, you may be blocked from editing. Comment on content, not on other contributors or people. Canterbury Tail talk 11:36, 28 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Is attacking a personal blog seen as a personal attack? Then you say "Please stop attacking other editors". Also, if you knew it was a personal blog, should you not have outlined the whole COI and Promotion rules instead of just being a ginormous twat.

Up yours,

Allan

Then why do you keep commenting here on my User Talk page. You attack my personal blog, which I am taking as a personal attack, considering you didn't even click through the links, and neglected to outline any rules which I had mistakenly broken at the time. Then you start whining like a little child about personal attacks. Anyway, personal attacks aside. As a helpful Wikipedia user? Tell me. How would one go about having an external link included into a Wikipedia article given it is worthy of being there and is of great use to readers visiting the page etc?

Also, how do I contact the Gods of Wikipedia? I would like to complain about the lazy and condescending nature of their patrollers. I honestly expected Wikipedia to be a more friendly and welcoming environment but it's 1* out 10 from me so far. There's some serious lack in communication skills.

I'm perfectly willing to engage you in conversation if you stop the personal attacks, I have no issue there, but calling people ginormous twats means people won't respond in a civil manner to you. So if you stop that then you can engage in conversation with others.
I mentioned your blog was non-notable, which it is as there are not independent sources out there claiming it's notable (and I did look at it, did my due diligence as is done with all Wikipedia edits, checked the links and searched on the net to see if any other sites that are notable were linking to it and found none other than manually listed sites.) Everything that I see suggests it's just a regular run of the mill non-notable personal blog. And since you are the owner it falls afoul of COI (which I linked below, admittedly afterwards.) Wikipedia is not a collection of links and is not to be used for self promotion, which appears to be what you are doing. It's not a travel guide, and not a directory as per WP:EL and WP:NOT and under no circumstances is it a place for people to promote their personal websites.
I made an assumption, perhaps incorrectly, that since you'd been a member for 8 years you knew of our policies and even the COI since you declared your COI last time on your userpage for your previous edits.
As for your main point the truth of it is, it's your personal web page, there's no evidence of any notability or that it's anything other than somewhere to post some (admittedly very nice) photographs and as a result you won't be able to get it listed on Wikipedia. Wikipedia is not a listing service, there is no right to have something included on Wikipedia, and any external links must provide enclyclopaedic value. A tourist guide is not encyclopaedic. You could try Wikitravel, but it's not a link that's of interest to Wikipedia. Canterbury Tail talk 12:58, 28 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

1. Well, you should have probably led with that.

2. All traffic to the website is tracked and there was no mention of anything outside of organic search in Wordpress, Google Analytics, or Cloudflare caching, so I’m really not sure what happened there.

3. The current Domain Authority of the site is 13 (Moz DA) which is impossible without high ranking links from authoritative websites, and this takes most websites years, rather than 2-months. Also, Moz shows no ‘manually listed sites’ that I can see of so I’m not sure what that’s all about. I could send you a bunch of articles if interested.

4. In all, a link from Wikipedia is really not much use to me or my website anyway (links are nofollow) and I will likely outrank Wikipedia on any topic I write about in the future. For example, try a Google search for “Northern Irelamd Food” and you’ll even find Bangorni is a trusted source before Wikipedia.

5. I only really came here when doing my own research, then noticed there were links to a finance blog written in Chinese (http://bangor-local.com/), so I edited and offered my own. Were it not for the snide and condescending tone I probably would have never returned on known any difference. As I didn’t even realise I had a Wikipedia account, but apparently I set one up 8 years ago. No idea why.

6. Anyway, by removing that Chinese finance site, and despite the unnecessary drama, I feel that my very brief contribution to Wikipedia has been a success (unless you see the other link as a better fit).

What are these external links for btw. They seem a bit pointless given they aren't allowed to link to things.

That old site is a site that apparently had been useful once but has lapsed and been domain grabbed by something else. So yes it was quite right for you to remove it. As for what are External Links for , the WP:EL page should explain all that. Basically they're for adding additional encyclopaedic content that the article isn't able to provide. So links to stats that would be valuable but not practical to have in an encyclopaedic article, primary links about an article subject (a companies website for example for an article on a company, or a person's own website on an article about them.) It is not for a directory of links related to an article topic. For example town articles can link to a site that is the official site for the town or, occasionally, a reputable site that provides historical information about the town. However things like a list of local businesses, sports clubs, eateries, how to guide for visiting etc, aren't encyclopaedic content. The links are to inform more on the subject, not teach them how to do something or the best way to plan a vacation etc. WikiTravel is actually a really good site for that sort of thing for which your link may be more useful. Canterbury Tail talk 16:56, 28 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Excellent, thanks. I assumed the references were used to expand on the current content, while external links were more for local websites on the town etc. So really it was the external links that were misleading as even Discover NI and ANDBC pages are questionable. Anyway, sincerest apologies, and keep up the good work, as I guess you're working here like free customer service. I just hope you don't come across more pests like me :)

No it's fine. Partially my fault. Sorry our interactions started off rough.
Oh and references are actually sources that back up particular pieces of information in articles to help prove the information. For instance in the Bangor article reference number 3 is being used as a source to prove the Irish name is Beannchar (that's what the 3 beside it in the opening line if for.) This is because material on Wikipedia needs to be verifiable and this shows the source of the information to prove it.
I do hope you continue to edit on Wikipedia and this doesn't sour you to the whole thing. Canterbury Tail talk 19:08, 28 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
