Please do not add inappropriate external links to Wikipedia. Wikipedia is not a mere directory of links, nor should it be used for advertising or promotion. Inappropriate links include (but are not limited to) links to personal web sites, links to web sites with which you are affiliated, and links that attract visitors to a web site or promote a product. See the external links guideline and spam policy for further explanations. Since Wikipedia uses nofollow tags, external links do not alter search engine rankings. If you feel the link should be added to the article, then please discuss it on the article's talk page rather than re-adding it. Thank you.--John 01:16, 14 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your message. I had a look at one or two of the links you were adding and it didn't seem like the sort of thing we would want to import into that many articles at once. I suggest seeking project support if you really think your links improve the articles. Certainly some kind of discussion would be essential wikiquette before making, what was it, nearly 100 additions all pointing to the same site. Please do let me know if you want any more help. --John 02:15, 14 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Certainly. Wikipedia is organised into projects. Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Alternative music or Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Music would probably be the best places to look. There will be people there who can give you more expert help in contributing, I hope. Good luck and best wishes. --John 03:24, 14 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, and I meant to say, if you type ~~~~ after your talkpage post it will produce your signature and a timestamp. --John 03:30, 14 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Try Talk:Teo Macero. Luck. --John 03:50, 14 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Are you associated with the artists house site? do you know the source of the video content (ie was it originally produced for that site)? I took a look around the artists house site and it appears to be a non-profit education-oriented site, so i'd tend to think that external links to it would be ok. Ammosh11, I'm working on a project, and would like to talk to you about the Teo footage-- how it was shot, etc. Would you send me an email at awmoat-wikitemp@yahoo.com and let me know the best way to reach out to you? Thanks very much. ANW 23:02, 25 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Your edit to Black Entertainment Television[edit]

Welcome to Wikipedia. We invite everyone to contribute constructively to the encyclopedia. However, the external links you added to the page Black Entertainment Television do not comply with our guidelines for external links. Wikipedia is not a mere directory of links; nor should it be used for advertising or promotion. Since Wikipedia uses nofollow tags, external links do not alter search engine rankings. If you feel the link should be added to the article, then please discuss it on the article's talk page before reinserting it. Please take a look at the welcome page to learn more about contributing to this encyclopedia. Thank you. --Dirk Beetstra T C 14:49, 28 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I am looking around, and see you discussed the link on a project page. Still, I must object to the link additions in this way. First of all per WP:COI (you do have a conflict of interest), further per WP:EL/WP:NOT#REPOSITORY, wikipedia is not a repository of links. Maybe the link can be used as a reference, but I think mass addition to external links sections should be addressed per WP:SPAM. Hope this explains. --Dirk Beetstra T C 14:54, 28 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I am answering here, you can also answer here, I'll try to keep an eye on the discussion.

Wikipedia defines spam as mass addition of links, it does there not really matter if the link itself leads to a good page. If you see current discussions on WT:WPSPAM you will see we are even discussing universities, libraries and musea, typical non-profit organisations. To quote WP:SPAM:

Adding external links to an article or user page for the purpose of promoting a website or a product is not allowed, and is considered to be spam. Although the specific links may be allowed under some circumstances, repeatedly adding links will in most cases result in all of them being removed.

The thing is, we are writing an encyclopedia here, not a linkfarm (WP:NOT#REPOSITORY. If your primary target is to add information, with references to your and other sites, then there is not much of an objection.

Now, there are exceptions, but you also have a conflict of interest.

Wikipedia is "the encyclopedia that anyone can edit," but if you have a conflict of interest avoid, or exercise great caution when: ... 3. Linking to the Wikipedia article or website of your organization in other articles (see Wikipedia:Spam);

To avoid all confusion etc., it is then better to only discuss links on talkpages, and not add them yourself (as all the guidelines and policies suggest, see e.g. WP:EL, WP:SPAM, WP:NOT, WP:COI). That also ensures that the linkaddition follows the pillar WP:NPOV.

So I am not judging the link, it may very well be a good link, I am just warning that with all our guidelines and policies, and bots watching such edits, you are setting of quite a number of alarms, and, even in all good faith, you may be breaching a number of policies or guidelines.

Hope this explains a bit further. --Dirk Beetstra T C 16:14, 28 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

In light of Dirk's comments, I've added a note at the music project talk page. Please review my comment there. I believe this will work out well in the long run, but it may take a while. In the meantime, I advise not adding any more of the links until there is consensus on how to do it. --Parzival418 Hello 21:27, 28 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
