The Hindu Young World Summer Smart Camp 2016[edit]

The Hindu Young World Summer Smart Camp 2016 is the second edition of the annual summer camp conducted by The Hindu Group, in Indian cities. The content of the camp has been tailored for children in two age groups: Basic Level (age 8 to 10) and Advanced Level (age 11 to 13). This year’s camp is being conducted from 2nd May 2016 to 20th May 2016 across three different cities- Chennai, Bangalore and Hyderabad.


About the Camp

The Hindu Young World Summer Smart Camp is a platform designed specially to equip children with a wide range of co-curricular skills in the fields of basic engineering, art, mathematics, language, team-building and the like. Open to children in the ages of 8 to 13, the camp provides children the opportunity to learn, think, share and stay resourceful during the summer break. This year's edition of the camp is planned to be held for a duration of five days, across three cities – Chennai, Bengaluru and Hyderabad.


The Chennai camp is scheduled for May 2 – 6, 2016 at four centres- Anna Nagar, Pallikaranai, Egmore, and Adyar. The Bengaluru camp is scheduled for May 9 to 13, 2016 in three centers – Kamaraj Road, VV Puram and Indiranagar. And the Hyderabad camp is scheduled for May 16th – 20th 2016 in three centres- Ameerpet, Dilsukhnagar, SD Road (Secunderabad).

The courses conducted on each day of the camp offers a specially curated mix of content which changes every day, to enable the children to explore new different skills. The courses offered in this year’s camp includes Robotics, Theatre, English, Quiz, Mathematics, Photography and Art.


Course Content

Robotics

The robotics session offers a hands-on training on basic robotic components, trying to educate the kids about the world of autonomous robots. This year’s camp lets the children will take home their own robotics kit. The course is designed in such a manner as to spark the kid’s interest in the field of engineering from a very young age. The Robotics session is handled by Kidobotikz, an initiative of SP Robotic Works Pvt Ltd.


The Know Your English

The course on know your English offers a chance for participants to learn in detail about English language and its various quirks – oxymorons, spoonerisms, analogies and similar concepts, designed specifically to make the children well versed in English language. This session is being handled by Scolympics, an initiative aimed at coaching the students in co-academic activities like Quizzes, Debates, Word Bees, Public Speaking, Essay Writing etc.


Quiz

This course is designed to introduce the kids to the world of quizzing. Various quizzing rounds covering topics like literature, sports, geography, history, films, music, science including special topics like cricket, origin of words & phrases will be conducted this year. In addition to art, quiz is also being handled by Scolympics.


Art

A new addition this year, this course encourages the students to explore their artistic side. The younger students will make a literal self-portrait and an observational artwork. Older students will work on an introspective self-portrait followed by a product design project. Art sessions are being handled by Rainbowfish Studio, an initiative teaching fine arts, design thinking and visual communications.


Theatre

In the Theatre session, the children will be trained in theatre exercises with newly curated modules, which addresses teambuilding and leadership skills, performance skills, acting, and voice modulation for dramatic performances. Theatre sessions are handled by Creashakthi, a Theatre Institution based in Chennai.


Fun With Numbers

Under the Fun With Numbers session, the younger students will be taken though the basic mathematical concepts like tangrams, logical thinking and pattern recognition skills, and a racy quiz involving calculated strategy and intelligent risks. The older students will be taught concepts like probability, sets, reasoning and deduction, and data magic square. This course is offered exclusively in the Chennai camps this year. The Mathematics sessions are handled by HeyMath!, an organisation Developed in formal collaboration with the University of Cambridge since 2000.


Photography

The photography session is designed to help children understand the basic concept of photography. The course helps the children explore their innate creative side by bringing out the artist in them.

The Young World Summer Smart Camp 2015 was the first edition of the Annual Summer Camp Series conducted by The Hindu Young World. It was conducted in the city of Chennai in May 2015, as part of celebrating the completion of 25th year of Young World, the Children's magazine under The Hindu Group. The camp was conducted across five different centres in Chennai. The 2015 edition of the camp offered courses and workshops in Mathematics, Memory techniques, Robotics, English and Theatre.
