Walter Devereux and son Walter Devereux

[edit]

I'm currently doing some research on the Devereux line on WikiTree and correcting what apparently is a conflation of two Walter Devereux males, father and son. Your work here makes it extremely easy to compile high quality sources for this effort and I greatly appreciate it! Monsieurdl mon talk 20:45, 1 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Stephen Devereux Grant by Gilbert de Lacy Reference?

[edit]

In the Stephen Devereux page (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stephen_Devereux) the statement "To secure his position in Hereford, Stephen Devereux accepted a grant from Gilbert de Lacy of 12 virgates of land in the manor of Staunton-on-Wye" doesn't have a reference.

It would be a surprise for the grant of land to be in Staunton on Wye as although the de Lacy family held this place (on and off), it was not held in demesne. Stanton Lacy is Shropshire would be more likely. I have seen other claims that the land was in Staunton on Wye and would like to see a conclusive reference, so would be interested in the reference to Stephen Devereux's charter.

I have a C14th copy of the original charter and the evidence from that strongly suggests Stanton Lacy. NortonCanonicorum (talk) 17:43, 30 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I think your point is good, and agree with that change. Thanks Arcussenilis (talk) 01:37, 7 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The issue is fully discussed in https://www.modellinghistory.com/sow/hca/hca_deeds_3226_3249_v1_4.pdf if you need a reference. The place is conclusively Stanton Lacy, and the paper traces the origin of the Staunton on Wye misapplication. NortonCanonicorum (talk) 08:13, 7 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I found a reference in one of my other sources and made the correction. Appreciate the additional reference. Thanks again. Arcussenilis (talk) 03:19, 11 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
