helpme[edit]

I have uploaded an image of artist Delmer J. Yoakum, which I am trying to add to his article. It is not showing up in the article when I try to add it. I was notified that it is set up for a "speedy deletion", yet I have permission to use it from the owner. --ArtAsLife 18:39, 27 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

What are you doing to try and add it? The reason it is tagged is that you have uploaded it as with permission, this is inadequate for wikipedia's purposes. The project is to build a free encyclopaedia, free being in the expansive sense of free to use, copy, modify etc. etc. An image with permission for use on wikipedia doesn't meet that goal as others would not be able to reuse it, modify it etc. Like the text images should be licensed under a free license such as GFDL or Creative Commons (Though the no-derivatives and non-commercial only versions of CC also do not meet the requirements and so also aren't usable on wikipedia) --pgk(talk) 19:08, 27 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
WP:BITE my dear. Tyrenius 19:37, 27 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Image:DelmerJYoakum.jpg Re. this image. Two routes. 1) you get a GDFL permission from the owner. This means basically that anyone can use this image in any way they want. I believe this would apply to the low res. version only, but you might need to check that. It is still credited to the copyright owner. 2) We go for fair use of this image, which is far less preferable. We are trying to phase out fair use images. In this case, we do not need the owner's permission, but we do need the source of the photo and copyright details. Let me know. Tyrenius 19:37, 27 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Go to the image page, and click edit. Delete anything that's no longer relevant, warnings and previous permission etc., and place this template: {{subst:GFDL}}. Also place an explanation of who owns the copyright, and say that they have given you permission for this to be a GDFL image. Give your user name, so that anyone who needs to can contact you to confirm that. Put any other useful information about the subject at the top of the page for people accessing it. I have put it in the article. Get back if you need to. Tyrenius 20:18, 27 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

That's fine. If you go to the article and click edit, you can see the code necessary to insert it. If ever in doubt about such things, go to a similar article and copy the code. Then adapt it. Tyrenius 20:40, 27 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

You haven't uploaded the image. See Image:DelmerJYoakumGrandCanyonDisneyland.jpg. Go to "upload file" and start again. You can use the same name for it. Otherwise, it seems to be OK. Tyrenius 21:12, 27 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

It's not there, so I have deleted the page. You can now start from scratch, if you wish, recreating the same page or a different one. The article is shaping up well. Please note that generally there should not be external links in the main text. If needed, they should go in the external links section at the bottom of the page. Items in the main text should have the usual internal wikilink if important enough. Red links can be useful to stimulate article creation. Tyrenius 22:27, 27 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

It is best to take any external links for info about artists out of the main body of the article and wikilink instead, even if red links. You can put the external links under the external links section. External links in the text should only be given as a reference to validate information, not merely as a link to extra information, if you see the difference. It's house style and enables people to navigate articles consistently. Red links are useful to let others know that there is not a wiki article on that person as yet.
The article is a very handsome presentation indeed and I must congratulate you on mastering so many of the intricacies involved. Consider also how useful internal links will be. You've linked all the words in "Primeval World Dioramic Scenery". It initially gives the impression that the reader is going to go to an article concerning the whole phrase, but they are linked to 4 different articles. Would a reader want to go to an article on "world" for example? This is fine tuning and I don't want to appear critical, but as you are creating the article at such a high standard, you might like to consider such points.

Image:DelmerJYoakumGrandCanyonDisneyland.jpg isn't uploaded by the way.

Anchor link[edit]

There's no way to wikilink to an anchor within the text of another article. The only way to do it is as an external link, which I have done. See history. I've made some minor changes, which are worth noting, namely film titles in italics, having the name of the film appear in the article (rather than the name of the film article with (1953 film) which isn't necessary), and also de-linked some year dates. Year date linking is optional, but not necessary unless for a particular reason. Consider how much you wikilink, as too much can be a bit distracting for the reader. Link what is important. The image does not appear for me at all, either on the image page, or in the article. I wonder whether you have it cached in your computer in such a way that it appears? Dunno. You could ask another user to check to see if it appears for them. I have no problem with any other image in wiki. Tyrenius 22:17, 28 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

CPU, etc[edit]

Thanks for your helpful contributions to articles, such as Columbia Pacific University. However I note that you are marking all of your edits as "minor". Minor edits are those that don't change the content meaningfuly, such as formatting changes or speeling corrections. You may have set that in your settings. Thanks for contributing in a non-minor way. Cheers, -Will Beback 18:02, 30 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Civility[edit]

Some folks admire the teaching of people that others consider to be humorously wrong. Though it is appropriate and necessary for Wikipedia to show all sides of an issue, it might be best to avoid antagonizing folks by ridiculing their teachers. I know it may be hard to keep a straight face when writing about people who claim to have a higher truth while seeming to lacking in ordinary truth, but we do need to stay neutral. to G11: I'm not sure what you were intending to do, but it looks like you deleted some comments from the Talk:David R. Hawkins. Was that intentional? Do you need help restoring the deletions? -Will Beback 04:55, 8 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

hi Will, just found out on your page that you are an admin in wiki. definitely i was not intending to delete parts of the discussion. my intention was to remove it from the archive (page 1) to the actual page 2. as i can see, all my entries (new and desplacements) are now gone. yes, please restore the lost parts. and let me know how one does correctly displace parts of the archive to the main page. have no idea what has happened. i could see my changes yesterday right after action though. rgds --Grazia11
