Hello AustralianCatholicUniversity. If you are affiliated with some of the people, places or things you have written about on Wikipedia, you may have a conflict of interest. In keeping with Wikipedia's neutral point of view policy, edits where there is a conflict of interest, or where such a conflict might reasonably be inferred, are strongly discouraged. If you have a conflict of interest, you should avoid or exercise great caution when:

  1. editing or creating articles related to you, your organization, or its competitors, as well as projects and products they are involved with;
  2. participating in deletion discussions about articles related to your organization or its competitors; and
  3. linking to the Wikipedia article or website of your organization in other articles (see Wikipedia:Spam).

Please familiarize yourself with relevant policies and guidelines, especially those pertaining to neutral point of view, verifiability of information, and autobiographies.

For information on how to contribute to Wikipedia when you have a conflict of interest, please see our frequently asked questions for organizations. Thank you. --Orange Mike | Talk 23:22, 20 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Your account has been blocked indefinitely from editing Wikipedia because it appears to be mainly intended or used for publicity and/or promotional purposes. Please read the following carefully.

Why can't I edit Wikipedia?

Your account's edits and/or username indicate that it is being used on behalf of a company, group, celebrity or other well-known individual, or organization for purposes of promotion and/or publicity. The edits may have violated one or more of our rules on spamming, which include: adding inappropriate external links, posting advertisements, and using Wikipedia for promotion. Wikipedia has many articles on companies, groups, and organizations, but such groups are generally discouraged from using Wikipedia to write about themselves. In addition, usernames like yours are disallowed under our username policy.

Am I allowed to make these edits if I change my username?

Probably not. See WP:FAQ/Organizations for a helpful list of frequently asked questions by people in your position. Also, review the conflict of interest guidance to see the kinds of limitations you would have to obey if you did want to continue editing about your company, group, or organization. If this does not fit in with your goals, then you will not be allowed to edit again. Consider using one of the many websites that allow this instead.

What can I do now?

You are still welcome to write about something other than your company or organization. If you do intend to make useful contributions on some other topic, you must convince a Wikipedia administrator that you mean it. To that end, please do the following:

  • Add the text {{unblock-spamun|Your proposed new username|Your reason here}} on your user talk page.
  • Replace the text "Your proposed new username" with a new username you are willing to use. See Special:Listusers to search for available usernames. Your new username will need to meet our username policy.
  • Replace the text "Your reason here" with your reason to be unblocked. In this reason, you must:
  • Convince us that you understand the reason for your block and that you will not repeat the edits for which you were blocked.
  • Describe in general terms the contributions that you intend to make if you are unblocked.
If you believe this block was made in error, please see how to appeal a block.

Requested username:

Request reason:

Apologies for breaching the Wiki guidelines, I was merely trying to correct factual information about our organisation. I have now read the Wikipedia FAQs for organisations and understand that the correct way to do this is to suggest the change in the talk page rather than actually editing the content. I don't intend to make many updates, just to make sure that information about ACU is kept up to date so that it is useful to those who search for information about us.

Decline reason:

Your new username must not relate to your university; your suggested new username does not address this problem. Additionally, we would appreciate if you avoided conflict-of-interest related work entirely. Hersfold (t/a/c) 00:32, 21 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Requested username:

Request reason:

Thank you for your additional feedback. I have now changed my username to something more appropriate and unrelated to my workplace. I can see your point about conflict of interest and respect the need for wikipedia to have impartial content. However, I can't see any other way for Wikipedia to publish up to date information if nobody supplies it. I will submit suggestions of updated, factual, verifiable content via the Talk page only, and leave it for admins or editors to verify and decide what they wish to publish. Is this a reasonable way forward?

Accept reason:

Allowing username change to requested username. Please put this request in at Wikipedia:Changing username as soon as possible to avoid re-blocking. (talk→ BWilkins ←track) 11:05, 23 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
That sounds reasonable, however, all "up to date" information would need to be sourced via a 3rd party source. The other thing to ensure is that only one person is ever permitted to use this account (talk→ BWilkins ←track) 10:22, 21 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
If, for the first while, you could leave a {{request edit}} with any edits you make to a talk page, that would be great. It would allow other users to oversee your edits. That, and understand that this account may only be used by one person; if those two things can be understood, I'm OK with unblocking. m.o.p 15:09, 22 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you Bwilkins and Master of Puppets. Of course I happy to comply with your suggestions. Is it possible to change over to the new username now and start afresh? AustralianCatholicUniversity (talk) 07:51, 23 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
