By the way, I don't think merging to a redirect will work. I think the best thing, if you want to merge the content, is to point the merge templates to Hacker (programmer subculture), and then request a rename to Hacker (subculture), and explain why the move is necessary. - SudoGhost 07:48, 21 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I wasn't sure how to handle that either, but it still points to the proper talk page.

It does point to the talk page of the redirect, but that's not the target of the merge, whatever the article's title ends up being. Also, please don't cut and paste the article, as this messes up Wikipedia's legal attribution requirements. Instead, you can request that the article be renamed at Talk:Hacker (programmer subculture). Thank you. - SudoGhost 08:00, 21 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
The target of the merge is intended to be the page currently set as a redirect.
I was following the guidlines and pointing to that page.
