Good references.

Your sentences are excellent - well written. My only suggestion would be to get rid of the colon or to present the genes regulated as a list:

Some of the many genes regulated by mir-11 include reaper (rpr), head involution defective (hid), grim and sickle (skl)[3] and dE2F1[4].

or

Some of the many genes regulated by mir-11 include:

  • reaper (rpr)
  • head involution defective (hid)
  • grim and sickle (skl)[3]
  • dE2F1[4]

Also note that when you're talking about a gene it should be italicized and lowercase, when talking about the protein product of the gene the first letter is capitalized and it's not italicized (e.g. the hid gene produces the Hid protein).
