Duke Photos

Thanks for the suggestions with regards to the Duke University page. The main reason I changed the picture of the statue was because of the weather, but you do make some valid points. If you want to revert back to the old picture feel free, but I do think the one I uploaded looks nicer. I'd take another one, but I'm home for the summer and not on campus. And I will keep in mind what you said if I want to make any future edits. NPatrick6 21:55, 25 June 2006 (UTC)

I forgot to mention... those panoramic pictures on the Duke page are great. They really add to the article. Just wanted to compliment you on that. Measuring Color

RE: Measuring color... There are a few ways to measure the color of something on your screen. One way is to take a screen shot, load the screen shot into an image editor, and then use the 'eye dropper' tool to 'grab' the color you want to measure. View that color in the color picker, and you should see its R: G: B: values, which can be expressed in the format #RRGGBB on the web. However, an easier way is to use an on-screen color viewer. There are several pieces of software that do this, but I like ColorPic [1] which is a free Windows program for measuring color. You open it up, and then wherever you move the mouse, you see a little magnified view, as well as the information for the color you are viewing at that moment. It even writes it out in the #xxxxxx format for you, ready for copy/pasting into an HTML or CSS document. Hope this helps! Phidauex 15:13, 22 June 2006 (UTC)

Hola - agreed on the unlisted Admirals, but I am gonna push for ADM Bowman and GEN Boomer. I'll just push in the background for a start. Not sure where my knee-jerk reaction came from at first (I guess 'cause it was an anonymous edit?). There are several dead links to ADM Bowman which is why I added the page; to some degree, though he may not be as well known - he *should* be...

Duke University

Sure, I can look over it—mind if I do it tomorrow sometime? Once I do that I'll vote on the FAC. I'll preemptively suggest that you eliminate about 80% of the external links—there's really no reason to have more than 5 or at the most 10 in there. You're right, in US English, punctuation goes inside quotes all the time. Here, however, according to WP:MOS#Quotation_marks, "include the punctuation mark inside the quotation marks only if the sense of the punctuation mark is part of the quotation." Just a Wikipedia convention that isn't completely observed but should be in FAs. I'll fix the ones you mention. As for the type of quotes, there's no difference in the appearance, but the non-curved ones are more common on the internet. Not a big deal at all.   is used to keep lines from breaking between the number and the unit, thus stranding the number on the previous line. — is the more conventional way of separating fragments: it prevents line breaks and just looks better. Pratt article move

I've found a couple sources that call the school the Edmund T. Pratt Jr. School of Engineering, including: http://www.pratt.duke.edu/news/releases/index.php?story=74 and http://www.pratt.duke.edu/about/history.php (down at the bottom in the year-by-year section in the year 1999). I'm not saying that you need to move the article back, after all, the full name is very rarely used, just that in the future you may want to propose changes on the article's discussion page first before just doing something major like moving it. In the first article, part of one of Keohane's quotes is "Ed Pratt has made a gift that promises to catapult the Edmund T. Pratt Jr. School of Engineering into the ranks of the leading centers of engineering education and research." It's possible that her statement is just rhetoric though. Edmund T. Pratt

Actually, the *official* name for the enginering school does include "Edmund T. Pratt, Jr." and, apparently, early on after the renaming some in the family were not happy if the folks answering phones used the informal "Pratt." DukeEgr93 03:23, 5 August 2006 (UTC)

New Duke Wiki

Not sure how/where else to ask this - a former student of mine has started a Duke-specific Wiki [2]], and we're using the GFDL to import several Duke-related pages. Would it be OK if we used your image File:ChapelLogoCom.svg on there as well? I, erm, already borrowed it for the time being (which you will see on pages such as http://www.duiki.com/wiki/The_Chapel), but if it's not cool let me know and I'll remove it. Douglas Kim

In regards to your post on my talk page, I will remove the prod on Douglas Kim in light of your sources; however, I am still concerned about the notability of a relatively new, young poker player dispite the monetary gains so early in his career. No matter, since I will step away from this topic for the time being. I do thank you for taking the time to address the prod in a clear, concise and respectable manner (lots of people get very defensive when articles are proded or AfDed). Ohio Wesleyan University

Quick question regarding the Ohio Wesleyan University. You left a very helpful comment regarding the page candidacy back in July. Since then, a lot of the issues that you mentioned have been improved on. Could you take a look and tell me what are some of the major areas that still need work and what work exactly? I was trying to walk a fine line between borrowing from the logical flow of the Duke article (a very good one actually) but making it relevant to OWU. Chapel Hell and Tarholes

  • The result of the UNJ-D AFD was to redirect to UNC-Duke Rivalry IMO. Someone changed that to an attack redirect to Duke, which I've reverted. I also deleted Carowhina. There is no purpose for these redirects to go to the targeted school, other than to give rivals of the targeted school a laugh. Otherwise, we'll wind up with redirects for every insult that someone at one school can think up for their rival. NawlinWiki 04:04, 12 October 2006 (UTC)
  • Ok, sounds good to me. I personally agree with you on this topic and think none of them should exist at all as I explained in the AfD discussion. I just created them because at the end it seemed like that's what people wanted. Also, when closing the discussion it was noted: "Please note that whilst I've recreated the article as a redirect to UNC-Duke rivalry, that is not part of this afd closure, the redirect destination can be changed via discussion on the article's talk page." I guess User:Remember didn't bother to have a discussion and took it upon himself to redirect it already. I'm still unclear though. If University of New Jersey at Durham redirects to UNC-Duke rivalry why shouldn't Carowhina and others also redirect to UNC-Duke rivalry? -Bluedog423Talk 04:09, 12 October 2006 (UTC)
User:Remember redirected it at my request, because I didn't know how. At the time, it seemed appropriate given the redirect of Bronx Bombers to New York Yankees and Carowhina to University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. However, the entire issue has been addressed since that time. I just don't want an innocent third party getting "blame" that should more correctly be directed to me.   • I think at this point Dubc0724 has come up with a compromise solution with respect to having the names listed for encyclopedic purposes but not as redirects or mainspace pages. Personally, I won't be adding the nicknames anywhere. Should someone else insert them in the rivalry page, it's up to them to defend it. Personally I think we should just let it go, as it's beomce beating a dead horse and our time can be better focused elsewhere. Dubc0724 12:42, 25 October 2006 (UTC)

Endowment

I am confused. Why did you change the endowment figure to a ridiculously low number $250,000? The goal of the campaign is to add $250 million, which is an ambitoous but feasible goal. The current endowment for OWU is more than 150 million already. Could you provide an explanation as you didn't even put for discussion? WikiprojectOWU 04:26, 19 October 2006 (UTC)

  • Sorry about that. I didn't change the endowment figure. I changed the goal of the fundraising. But as soon as I did it I thought that $250,000 was way too small and I was about to put something on the discussion page asking the real value. It said $250,000 million, which is equal to about $250.0 trillion or something. So I was unsure what that meant. But I obviously chose a value that is way too low. I also couldn't find a source so I couldn't find the actual value. I'm changing it back now. Sorry again. -Bluedog423Talk 15:51, 19 October 2006 (UTC)
