sound barrier

[edit]

In school we are learning about sound and sound waves. But my question is how can a plane brake the sound barrier when the sound is comming from behind?

sound barrier- dr books

[edit]

That's great that you are learning about the sound barrier! Take a plane for an example, the sound waves come from the plane and gradually gets bigger and bigger around the plane. But the plane is faster than the speed of the waves as it gets bigger and bigger. Sound waves still travel from the plane and expanding and the plane is still going faster and faster and the waves are piling up on each other. Finally the plane just breaks through the piles of waves or the sound barrier because it's going so fast. When the plane breaks through, we here a loud boom!-Dr books
