Erm, here, I guess. So if i leave a message on your page you get that yellow box like I did? So how did you know that I'd asked for help?

Yes, anytime anyone other than you changes your talk page, you'll get the yellow box.
Some helpful souls hang out on IRC, and a program tells them when someone has added {{helpme}} to their talkpage.
Often, if you have questions about Wikipedia itself, you can search for WP:something-or-other and get something related. For example: WP:talk page Josh Parris 12:09, 15 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
