Hi please don't change dates without sourcing

[edit]

Based on your edits to Family tree of Chinese monarchs (ancient) and your username, which is extremely similar to blocked User:Caymanalmodovar500, who disruptively changed dates without sourcing, I feel like you're probably preparing to make a number of unsourced date changes to early Chinese history articles. Please don't. Folly Mox (talk) 19:32, 28 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I know. I’m not trying to screw up like last time. I’m not trying to be disruptive. It’s just that I study history. Caymanalmodovar93 (talk) 19:38, 28 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

And how do I source. Caymanalmodovar93 (talk) 19:40, 28 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Help:Referencing for beginners is a how-to guide that might help you get started with sourcing. Wikipedia:Citing sources is the relevant content guideline.
Basically, whenever you add or change a date, you'll want to say where you got the information, specifically. "According to the Chinese" is not sufficient. You'll want to add a footnote in the article, not just in the edit summary.
Please keep in mind that Nathan Sivin and David Pankenier, amongst other collaborators, have positively dated the Battle of Muye to 1046 BCE using astronomical data (see also Xia–Shang–Zhou Chronology Project). So even if you have a source which shows a different date for Late Shang or Zhou era kings (for example, the Bamboo Annals), it may have been superseded by newer information. I'm not certain of the verifiability and scholarly acceptance of most of the dates in our articles about early Chinese monarchs, but you'll want to have a convincing case for changing dates, not just that you saw a different date somewhere.
Lastly, since your previous account has been blocked, you might get in trouble for just starting over. There's bureaucracy. You might want to check out Wikipedia:Guide to appealing blocks as recommended by blocking admin @Tide rolls: and appeal the block under your earlier account.
Good luck! Folly Mox (talk) 01:34, 29 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

How do I source? Caymanalmodovar93 (talk) 02:23, 29 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Please read Help:Referencing for beginners and Wikipedia:Citing sources. Those pages should help you. Folly Mox (talk) 02:26, 29 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I understand. I just prefer the traditional dates, but I understand. How do I source? Caymanalmodovar93 (talk) 17:55, 3 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

The answer to your question can be found in the policy and guideline pages linked in the previous messages. If you've read those pages and have specific questions regarding policy/procedure, please ask them. Keep in mind you will need to request unblock from you original account, however. I just prefer the traditional dates is not an adequately persuasive reason for changing the dates. Is there scholarly consensus for the dates you prefer? Wikipedia summarizes what peer-reviewed sources state. If you are unable to source traditional dates to modern scholarly works, that could be an indication that the dates you prefer do not enjoy scholarly consensus, and have in fact been superseded by modern research. Wikipedia is not a place for editorial preference, ego, or original research. If you have a case to argue for traditional dates, a peer-reviewed publication may be a more suitable venue for that information, which could thence percolate into Wikipedia.
Please bear in mind that Wikipedia is its own community with its own precepts, goals, and strictures. As in any endeavour, you will have to meet other humans part-way in order to communicate your truth and meet your own needs. To that end, I would ask you to take on board the advice given you by User:Tide rolls if you wish to join the community as a positive contributor. Best wishes, Folly Mox (talk) 06:02, 4 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Blocks are applied to individuals. Creating a new account after one is blocked is block evasion and is a violation of policy. You will need to seek unblock from your original account. Tiderolls 10:24, 29 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
