metric units

Hi there: I notice that you decided to translate imperial units into metric for one of my Victorian battleship articles. Although the conversions are correct, metric units were never used in this country in Victorian times, which is why, although I have them to hand, I did not use them. The size of the White Ensign was intentional; it is usually better only to edit if you find an error or have something extra to add to an article. --Anthony.bradbury 22:07, 30 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Anthony, regarding the metric units I added. I added the units so that anyone with little or no knowledge of the Imperial system (much of the world) could have a concept of the scale of the ship. I understand that the units may not have been used in the 19th century, but the people reading it will be from the modern day and the article will probably have more relevance to them this way. I never remove information from articles, only try to make them accessible to all. I am sorry if you feel I have adversely affected the article; if so, please let me know if you have any ideas for accommodating modern day units in a better way. I didn't change the flag either, that must have been someone else. As I said, I don't remove or change stuff I don't know about, only try to add what I know. Lots of people use English Wikipedia who aren't from the US or UK - to many of these the Imperial measurements have little or no meaning without some kind of conversion. Younger people in the UK (like myself) have been educated solely in the metric system (since the 1970s), therefore they will generally understand metric better than Imperial too.
