Mandacaru

[edit]

The Mandacaru cactus (Cereus jamacaru) is a plant of the family Cactaceae. It is common in Northeastern Brazil and it can reach over 5 feet tall. There is a thornless variety, used for animal feed. The common variety is highly prickly and is also used in animal feeding if its thorns are burned or cut off. Mandacaru can resist even the strongest droughts. The flowers of this species of cactus are white, very beautiful and measure approximately 30cm in length. The flower buds usually appear in the middle of spring and each flower lasts only one night period, i.e. bloom at dusk and wither at dawn. Its fruit has a strong violet color. The pulp is white with tiny black seeds and it´s very tasty.Clydefonseca (talk) 00:48, 1 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
