Citations

[edit]

Hi Curtisc83, just wanted to give you a couple notes about your recent addition of Co. B, 51st Signal Bn. on the list of Presidential Unit Citations. You actually got the information on there correctly, though it needed a bit of formatting cleanup which I've done. There's really two main things I wanted you to note, since you mentioned you weren't sure how to cite it.

First, the method you used of <ref>[link]</ref> technically works, but it doesn't look great: down in the references section, the footnote will look like this [1] with no additional information. If you put a blank space after the link, and then write some text, it looks better (Example: You can write whatever here). Even better than that is using the "cite web" template, instead of the [ ] external links. To do that, it's <ref>{{cite web|url=whatever|title=whatever|website=whatever}}</ref> (you'll need to replace "whatever" with the appropriate info, see Template:Cite web for full explanation of all the fields you can use) and it prints out the nicely formatted footnotes you see on most of our articles.

The other thing I wanted to show you, is that if a reference is going to be reused multiple times, you can give it a name, by using <ref name=whatever>put the rest of your citation here</ref> and then you can later reuse that same reference quickly by <ref name=whatever />. So for instance, on the Presidential Unit Citation article, you can see someone's already done that with the "Marines.mil" reference commonly used, and I've updated it similarly for the source you used (I was in Co. A, 3-124th IN, listed in that same batch of awards as y'all were, so it's helpful for me).

Anyway, I hope this helps make editing a bit more smooth in the future, and thanks for your service. SWATJester Shoot Blues, Tell VileRat! 19:13, 5 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
