Some early comments:

• GNG always struck me as a For Dummies criterion. This being the Wikipedia that anyone can edit, the logic was probably that anyone should be able to determine the worthiness of inclusion of something by a metric such as a word count that requires virtually no knowledge of the topic. More elaborate ways in which this rule breaks down is: stuff with lot of "trivial" references, such as citations. Citations are golden in academia, yet they are considered riff-raff in Wikipedia (for notability purposes) in the official rule book anyway. You can have something with thousands of citations that some deletionists will argue are "trivial", yet a lengthy piece in a local newspaper makes something notable. (More later)...
