December 2019[edit]

Information icon Please do not add or change content, as you did at Jack Kerouac, without citing a reliable source. Please review the guidelines at Wikipedia:Citing sources and take this opportunity to add references to the article. Thank you. General Ization Talk 02:41, 13 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I am a reliable source. I’m Jack Kerouac’s 1st cousin and know through genealogy. Stop changing the edit since you are not a reliable source. DavidNepveu (talk) 08:55, 13 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

- family histories are not reliable sources for Wikipedia articles - WP:RS says, "Wikipedia articles should be based on reliable, published sources" - WP:VERIFY says that "Even if you're sure something is true, it must be verifiable before you can add it" - in order to add Native American ancestry to the Jack Kerouac article, it must be published in a reliable source - Jack Kerouac said in an interview that he had Native American heritage, but he told many different stories of his heritage, so the claim is not reliable - WP:INTERVIEW says, "Interviews may be published in reliable publications, but that does not make primary source material contained in them acceptable to cite claims for which Wikipedia requires secondary sources." - Epinoia (talk) 17:37, 20 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Wrong! DavidNepveu (talk) 18:36, 20 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

- simply reinstating your edit will not accomplish anything (see Wikipedia:Edit warring) - a citation to a reliable published source is required to support your claim of Jack Kerouac's Native American ancestry, as per Wikipedia guidelines (see WP:RS, WP:VERIFY) - I started a discussion on the Jack Kerouac Talk page on December 13, 2019, you are welcome to state your position there and seek consensus with other editors - thanks - Epinoia (talk) 15:58, 22 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

You’re not an expert. I’m going to continue to add his Native American ancestry. DavidNepveu (talk) 17:43, 22 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

- if you do, without providing citations to reliable sources or seeking consensus via the Talk page discussion, you may be blocked from editing for edit warring - see WP:BRD for the process - if you feel your edits are being unjustly reverted you can use the Wikipedia:Dispute resolution process - Epinoia (talk) 18:12, 22 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I will get a certified copy of the genealogy. In the mean time stop being nasty and leave the ancestry to include his Native American heritage. I’m his first cousin by the way and have a professional genealogical study for my family. Do you ever consider that maybe you don’t know everything? DavidNepveu (talk) 23:48, 23 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

- Wikipedia guidelines require citations to reliable published sources to support the claim of Native American ancestry - see WP:RS, "Wikipedia articles should be based on reliable, published sources"; WP:VERIFY, "Even if you're sure something is true, it must be verifiable before you can add it"; WP:CITE, "Wikipedia's verifiability policy requires inline citations for any material challenged or likely to be challenged" - a genealogy is not a reliable source unless it has been published, see Wikipedia:Reliable sources for "Definition of a source" and "Definition of published - Epinoia (talk) 00:47, 24 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I’m having a genealogical study done for the Nepveu/Kerouac family lineage. Jack was not wrong about his Native ancestry although he took liberties with his embellishments. I’ll have the citation added. In the mean time please leave the page with the Native American ancestry up. I’m going to keep changing it back if you’re going to keep removing it. DavidNepveu (talk) 13:11, 24 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Does it bother you that Jack Kerouac has Native American ancestry? Are you a racist? DavidNepveu (talk) 13:13, 24 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

- Wikipedia is an encyclopedia and has guidelines covering content - content must be verifiable (see WP:VERIFY) - if a reliable published source confirms that Jack Kerouac had Native American ancestry, then it can be added to the article with a citation to the published work - a family genealogy is not a reliable published source, it must be an independent source as per WP:RS - Epinoia (talk) 16:04, 24 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
