Welcome!

[edit]

Hello, DomhanIlteangach, and welcome to Wikipedia! Thank you for your contributions. I hope you like the place and decide to stay. However , I noticed that you did not cite sources for your changes in the article Scottish Gaelic. Is there a phonetic dictionary of Irish with the IPA as a reference? I am just concerned because the article has seen a lot of expert attention, such as by User:Akerbeltz, and I wouldn't expect it to have blatant errors. Glad for help with An Caighdeán Oifigiúil!

[edit]

Hi Domhan,

I'm delighted to see someone else finally take an interest in the An Caighdeán Oifigiúil article!

I'm the one that had removed the text you re-added. The reason is that it doesn't seem to make any sense. There's plenty of jargon suggesting it was written by someone with expertise, but the text relies on various terms which are undefined, and then, more problematically, compares things without saying why they're being compared or what the comparison reveals. I made a list of some of the problems here:

(That's just a quick list I made in the hope of attracting some help. Now that I know someone is actually looking, I could make a longer and more detailed list of problems.)

If the re-added text makes sense to you, then you must have some specialist insight, so maybe you could fix the text so that others can get something out of it without having to be specialists.

What do you think of the problems I raised? Can we continue this on the Talk page? Great floors (talk) 16:33, 1 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I just the text again, but this only confirmed my previous summary. I can't make head nor tail of it. First, many sentences are not even about criticisms, so they should at least be moved to a new section, or to Characteristics. For example, saying that the Caighdeán had to chose between leaba and leabaidh, and that the former was chosen - that's not a criticism. They had to chose, and they did. If we were to reformulate that as an actual criticism, we could say that some people in region X criticise the Caighdeán because it didn't chose their spelling every time. But that would be a pretty silly criticism, given the purpose of the Caighdeán, and I've never encountered anyone making that criticism.
We also have to keep in mind that the Caighdeán only talks about spelling. Speakers in all regions can pronounce "beag" any way they want.
I'm just at a total loss as to what points the author was trying to make. Especially if these are "criticisms". And then there's also the use of "historically correct", which I don't understand. Great floors (talk) 17:24, 1 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I'm going to remove the text again. If you see this and can help improve the text, leave a message here or on Talk:An Caighdeán Oifigiúil or on my Talk page. Great floors (talk) 03:34, 14 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hello! I hope the new year has started well for you! My apologies for the delay in replying. I have been extraordinarily busy and will be so still for a number of weeks. I will at some stage address the issues that you raised but in the meantime I think it would be wise to restore the text since -although it is not perfect- it is still relevant (for reasons I do not currently have time to address) and it is at least more informative and thought-provoking than if there is no text to do so.

Ok, looking forward to getting the article fixed. I looked at the article two or three years ago and left the block of text as it was because I couldn't understand it enough to see what fixes were needed. When I looked at it again a few months ago (and it was still there, unchanged) I decided to remove it because it's a mix of off-topic info and incomprehensible sentences. I reckon nobody wants to edit the article because it nobody can understand it. At least with a kinda blank page maybe someone will one day write something. But that's just my opinion. See you in a few weeks. Great floors (talk) 18:18, 31 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
