Sharpie ORIGINS 1964 Melbourne hit a climax in winter 1966 with sensational media coverage of the Sharpie gangs being escorted out of the hear of the city of Melbourne which influenced a cult of youth who were looking for a sense of identity and purpose a dare to be different It was 1964 Our schoolboy gang of 8 It was John whose big brother several years older than us who led the way of fashion for us we were only 13 to 14 teen were known as the 64s MELBOURNE TOP FELLAS the STETSON BOYS were SHARP and coined SHARPIES in 1966 COLLINGWOOD CARLTON RICHMOND NORTH FITZROY BRUNSWICK COBURG RESERVIOR..then ST KILDA HAMPTON later Kensington FOOTSCRAY WILLIAMSTOWN Tired of being Rockers the look of our greasy hair and tight geasy jeans, black cardigans white T shirts- we were changing it was Rockers and Jazzers as in England Mods and Rockers clashed so did the Rockers and Jazzers The times were changing the MUSIC as well the MERSEY SOUND from Liverpool were all clean cut from what we saw in reality they were reformed Teddy boys and rockers but groomed by clever managers to market an export quality image It influenced locally The Easybeats (band) though with long hair wore suits as did Billy Thorpe the culture was changing .It was our peers big brothers that started the Sharp look from Tailors like De Monaco Lygon Street Carlton there was the 3 button Chocolate Brown Italian jumpers with collars underneath similar 3 button crestknit banlons maroon sky blue bone and blue and chocolate brown trousers White Trench Coats and Boxer Coats then later Cable knite cardigans the Conti cardigans at first Italian pointy toe shoes from Cusmanos, in collingwood and other shoe shops in Abbotsford the fashion included Stetson Hats from Flinders Street City near the Railway station clocks How tough it felt just being dressed and with 200 gang members
