RE: e-mail

thank you for your e-mail message. I hope you don't mind my replying here, mostly for your convenience (so that you can follow any blue links I provide). I understand that Wikipedia policy can be quite confusing; there is a lot to learn about Wikipedia. I have been here a bit over 4 months myself, and there are still many things left for me to learn.

There are 2 guidelines that cover external links: WP:EL and WP:SPAM. The former is a general guideline for determining the type of links that are appropriate and inappropriate, while the latter in part emphasizes what is considered inappropriate links. One of the parts that apply in this case can be found in WP:SPAM, under the section "how not to be a spammer". Adding links to the same external website across multiple articles is generally frowned upon. In WP:EL, under "Links normally to be avoided", it indicates that one shouldn't add links to websites that they are affiliated with, to avoid neutrality and other concerns.

In short, it's best to avoid adding these links yourself. If you feel the link is truly useful, you can mention it on an article's talk page. Other neutral editors can discuss the link and determine whether to include it or not. If they agree that it's useful, then the link has the weight of consensus to back it up.

There is an exception to this, however. If your site can be considered a reliable source by Wikipedia standards, and you have information on your site that can serve as a citation, then you can add information to a Wikipedia article that can be learned about from the website (in your own words, of course), then add the appropriate link as a citation.

Wikipedia is beginning to have a real problem with linkspam due in part to its popularity. You've probably found other articles that have inappropriate external links. While many ELs meet external links standards, many do not. We do our best to remove any inappropriate ones that we see. If you run across articles with links that do not meet these standards, you're welcome to mention it on the article's talk page, bring it to the attention of myself or a member of the Wikiproject Spam, or you can simply remove them yourself.

Epaulette shark
