Right. I seem to be feeling a bit better. Like I said, I'll be happy to mentor you. I'm not sure how everyone else is doing the mentoring, but I'd say it's a fairly individual matter anyway, so we should do it how we like. Therefore, I was wondering if you could tell me what you'd expect from a mentor? I'm happy to provide as much or as little support as you need, you are always welcome to ask me questions or for a third opinion (There's no such thing as a stupid question - if you are unsure, ask!) and I'll keep a regular eye on your contributions in case I pick up any areas where I think you could do with a little help.
Just as an addendum, I see you are very new to wikipedia, so I thought I'd give you a hand on sending me messages. You have a few options
  1. You can leave a message on this page. I will be watching it and will reply within 24 hours.
  2. You can click on my signature where it says Worm. This will take you directly to my talk page, where you can edit a section to leave me a message. Besides email, this will be the fastest way to contact me, as the bright orange bar I get (you might have noticed it, for this message) will alert me. (During UK office hours, it might even be faster than email!)
  3. You can start a new section on my talk page, either directly from my talk page or using this link
  4. You can email me using this link
So you can do whichever you find easiest for you. Also, I've added a template on your userpage, which has some quick links. (Hopefully I've got the right course!). Yeah, I've read the course page a few times and I got the impression they're still working out the best way forward. It looks like they're going to get the grad students sorted first and then worry about the undergrads, always the way - the more letters you have after your name the more important you are. Anyway, I'm pretty new to this mentoring idea but I do know my way around Wikipedia pretty well, so either you can wait until things start heating up or start sooner, either way I'll be around to help. Losing references

Hi Worn..realozedI didn't lose my info. I thought all the stuff I put in the sandbox stays there...it doesn't I found all my stuff under the history tab..LOL..anyway thanks for the info. Eire's Son 01:35, 8 March 2011 (UTC)

Hey Eire's Son. How's it going? I see you have lost a few references - can be a little bit of a pain when things like that happen, can't it. I remember once my PC died and I lost an entire project myself and 2 class mates had been working on on the Saturday before the Monday it had to be handed. One of my lowest points! I ended up dismantling 2 PCs to create something stable enough to recover an old version, meaning I only had about 2 days work lost, rather than 3 months. I was lucky but it was a heck of a couple of hours. Anyway. Enough of the anecdotes, as long as you save regularly, you should be ok, but let me know if you're still struggling. Thanks Worn for the info, but I lost the info in my sandbox, I don't know if it was because I did or didn't hit a button or what, buy luckily I saved the sites in MY Favorites so I was able to reload them...it just took a little longer to cut and paste. Since then I am just putting everything in WORD and just cut and paste it to the sandbox.Eire's Son 14:20, 27 February 2011 (UTC)

First off, sorry it's taken a while to get back to you, I've been away from my computer for a couple of days. I'm not sure why it's happening. One issue that sometimes happens is "edit conflicts" if two or more people try to save the same page twice, the page can get confused. If you have your sandbox open in more than one window, and save in both, it will lose the information from the first one.
Another possibility is that you have a required edit summary ticked on your preferences. If so, you will need to put an edit summary or press save twice.
If it's neither of these, we can pop along to the help desk and they'll have some more technical solutions. Or have a word with Starry, who hasn't had similar problems - see if she's doing anything differently. WormTT 09:19, 28 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Just a thought. You have two sandboxes that you are contributing to. One linked on your main page, one on this page. Is this where the confusion lies? Check out User:Eire's Son/Eire's Son Sandbox and User talk:Eire's Son/Sandbox. Top of the morning to ya, Eire's Son. I hope you had a good St. Paddy's day yourself, I managed to indulge in a pint of the black stuff, so I enjoyed the Craic! Anyway. As for you're work in the sandbox, I've had a bit of a snoop. It's looking pretty good, but does need a bit more work.
  • You may want to focus on a slightly more "encyclopedic" way of writing, comments like "whatever we choose to call it" are likely to be removed quite quickly. It should be written in a factual manner, not asking questions etc.
  • Wikipedia uses inline references, keeping the reference between two tags - <ref> and </ref>, then in a References section, you can use the template {{reflist}} and it will generate a pretty reflist for you. Have a look at Wikipedia:Citing sources for more info.
  • The article would look better broken into sections, with titles. Generally, Wikipedia articles follow the same format, a lead, which includes the article title in bold, which is a short summary of the article, followed by sections which go into more depth. To seperate the sections, I recommend titles ( showing by equals signs. So a "level 2" title would look like ==Level 2 title==)

Had a Grand Day, and few pints meself, marched with my AOH brothers as we stepped off first with the ladies AOH. AS for my article...thanks for the info, it was just a rough draft and I guess I have to also realign my topics under the proper headings, I looked at another layout so I can follow the same format. And yes I can see what you are saying about I and we's...NO personal input or ideas, feelings, etc. LOL. I have a bit more research to ad to the article anyway, just wanted your input. Thanks for the info and feedback, what the article is about is the lawsuit(s) associated with the controversary abbout rock climbers using Devils Tower and the Indian's regarding it as a sacred site. I will look at the Devils Tower article and see if I can just add this to it? What do ye think?


Thanks for the input and recommendations, basically the article is about the controversary surrounding the climbers using Devils Tower for recreational climbing and the indians regarding it as a sacred site. Not quite ready for article space

Before you move the article to article space, there's a few things that need to be done to get it up to Wikipedia standard.

  • It's not actually clear what the article is about. (There already is an article on Devil's Tower National Monument)
  • Wikipedia articles start with a short lead which gives an overview of the article. (Have a look at my article on Doom Bar to get an idea of the layout) The title of the article should be mentioned in the first sentence and highlighted in bold by using ''' at the start and end of the title. (So it should say something like "Devil's Tower is a large rock in Wyoming).
  • There are no wikilinks in the article. Concepts which are not obvious to every reader, should be linked with [[ and ]], similar to how I've linked Wyoming above.
  • References should be in line, using <ref> and </ref>, along with the cite templates {{cite book}}, {{cite web}} etc
  • Section header should be marked with == and == for level 2 headers, not bold text
  • You have a few stray "italic texts" which need removing.
  • The "beginnings" section is not really written in an encyclopedic style. Have a look on the Devil's Tower National Monument article to see how they've dealt with the folklore section, or indeed my Doom Bar article, which has something similar.

Don't get me wrong, you've made a great start, but it will need a bit more work before it's ready for main space. WormTT · (talk) 09:14, 21 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
