October 2007[edit]

Hello Evansdave. Wikipedia is not for advertising or promotion. Neutral editors may be concerned that your recent changes to Social media were intended to promote Bazaarvoice. This article is supposed to include only *prominent* examples (services which are extremely well-known). When Bazaarvoice becomes extremely well-known, that may be the time to consider adding it. Though your intentions may have been perfectly good, the fact that you have made no edits to Wikipedia except the ones trying to add Bazaarvoice is a concern. Ed, thanks for the note; makes perfect sense. In making relatively substantial edits to the Social Media entry it occurred to me that "Rating and Reviews" was missing--this is a key aspect of Social Media. Bazaarvoice is a well-known firm (within the industry) that provides this service. I emailed you as well on the expert process. I appreciate your edits and look forward to speaking with you more.dave evans 03:35, 25 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Dave, thanks for your response, and welcome to Wikipedia. Note that you should sign your messages on Talk pages using four tildes ~~~~ before pressing the 'Save Page' button. (This allows Talk pages to remain coherent). Since you are proposing a large change to the article, and the article constantly risks becoming vague and unfocussed, it is preferable if you propose your edit at Talk:Social media first, and get comments on your changes. Also you should be sure that you have third-party independent sources for any new claims that you wish to add to the article. This article is not intended to be a venue for opinions or editorial comment on the field of social media (not that you were planning that, it's just a general concern). We are supposed to reflect published scientific knowledge about the field we are describing.
Regarding Bazaarvoice, try comparing its Google hits against the other services currently in the article, to see if it is of comparable note. It is not up to us to blaze new trails in recognizing upcoming services that have not yet hit the mainstream. You should also figure out how many reliable sources have written about it, because we judge notability by what those sources have considered important. Thanks for the helpful guidance. Not only does the time you spent help me become a better contributor faster, it also encourages me to learn more--and faster--about how to properly use and contribute to Wikipedia.dave evans 03:35, 25 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
