Bill Smith Studio was set up in 1978, working in the entertainment and sports sectors, acting as consultants to a number of record companies and organizations such as International Amateur Athletic Federation and British Athletic Federation. Bill Smith was creative director for hundreds of music artists including Rolling Stones, Kate Bush, Genesis, The Jam, Van Morrison and Mike Oldfield. Bill Smith Studio employed 6-8 full time designers to work on music work and general design work from 1980-2002. During this time the studio was responsible for some of the biggest names in music, as above. For the Jam the studio designed 21 single covers and 6 album covers from the initial releases of single and album “In The City” through to “Bitterest Pill”. Bill Smith also directed the promo videos for “Funeral Pyre” and “the Bitterest Pill”, before ending the relationship over ‘artistic differences’. Bill Smith Studio had long term relationships with artists such as Genesis – designing 4 albums and many singles; Kate Bush – designing 3 albums and many singles, including “Hounds of Love”, “This Woman’s Work” and “Sensual World”. For Van Morrison, BSS designed singles and albums including “Enlightenment” and “Whenever God shines His Light”. BSS worked with Queen on “the Works” using famous Hollywood photographer Horowitz for the front cover image. Work with the Rolling Stones meant a week long stay in New York designing ‘on-the-spot’. Bill Smith studio head traveled all over the world from Japan to New York, LA and Sahara Desert, art directing photo sessions and creative directing video shoots. Bill’s work for Led Zeppelin’s box set was nominated for Grammy in the US and his box set for King Crimson “Frame by Frame”, won a US industry award; his work has featured in many exhibitions and in books on music design.

BSS were design consultants to the International Amateur Athletic Federation from ’83-’90, designing all publications, branding World Athletic Championships for global use, and event programmes for European events, as well as idents for onscreen programming. BSS became consultants to Dorna Sports in ’93 rights holders of the World Motorcycle Championships and have been responsible for the MotoGP programme licence since that time and have helped to grow the programmes business with annual growth in turnover ever since. The partnership with Dorna has led to creative work for other companies involved with moto sport including, in 2004, the launch of Scalextric MotoGP product range for their slot track technology.
