Regarding Doug Engelbart

[edit]

Generally, any sort of material of that nature needs what's called a verifiable and WP:Notable source. I.E. a local newspaper with the announcement, an online news article, etc. As far as the conflict of interest, Wikipedia has guidelines regarding people editing subjects they are related to. I.E. someone working for Microsoft coming in and editing the Microsoft article. Or in this case, Doug coming in (which we have no way of verifying if its actually him) and editing on his own biography. This is usually done to avoid controversy that such edits may cause, especially in articles dealing with or that have sections pertaining to controversial subjects. The policy is described in WP:COI. Likewise, because its a biographical article and Doug is still obviously living, there are also guidelines pertaining to that at WP:LIVE. Most importantly, that all facts need to be verified. Specifically "We must get the article right. Be very firm about the use of high quality references. Unsourced or poorly sourced contentious material about living persons — whether the material is negative, positive, or just questionable — should be removed immediately and without waiting for discussion, from Wikipedia articles, talk pages, user pages, and project space."

None of this has to do with his son, its just standard operating procedure. If you can provide a published reference to the wedding, it can certainly be added back in. Likewise, to add a reference, you simply type <ref>the citation</ref>. Likewise, there are actual already made templates for various reference types that you can put in the ref tags instead of just typing the plain text. These templates are located at WP:CIT. Hope this helps. --Marty Goldberg (talk) 06:33, 17 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
