Intro:

This is regarding Model Y1K. Styling came up with 4 1:3 scale clay concept models, concept A,B, D and H. Out of which 2 were shortlisted - concept B and D. Our objective was to evaluate these two concepts for their aerodynamic drag performance and to suggest countermeasures to improve their performance. Aerodynamic drag has a direct impact on F.E of the vehicle. The higher the drag..lower will be the F.E of the vehicle.

At this concept stage, aerodynamic feedback becomes important because once the styling is frozen – there is very limited scope of improvement. This feedback was utilized by the management in selecting the final design. The challenge was to develop a CFD model with limited data. Underbody, engine, suspension, ORVMs – all of these are not designed yet. So it required coordination with all the engineering dept.s so that the Y3J’s parts could be morphed to match the exterior styling and the resultant CFD model could be made as close to the final designs as possible.

The result is that the drag of the concept B is 13 counts lesser than the concept D. and also the frontal area of concept B is 0.5% less than the concept D. These 2 factors make concept B 0.2 kmpl more efficient than concpet D.

A number of countermeasures were proposed to reduce the drag further. 2 countermeasures QTR Spoiler and roof end design were benchmarked from Tiago and were giving 5 counts of improvement.

Now the current status is that concept B is selected by the management with changes in the front and rear end of the vehicle. These changes will be implemented in the 1:1 scale clay model. Our next plan will be to evaluate 1:1 scale model and reduce drag in it and this model will also be evaluated in SMC WT in nov end. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Gaurav4291 (talk • contribs) 10:32, 16 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]
