How to create .xowa file for Android app from xml file

Hi, me from "Adding new extension from Wikia" again.

Since days ago, i heard you've released your awesome software for Android version.

And i want to download some wikis (mostly from wikia site) to my devices for reading offiline :3 . I've read all your Android Setup instructions page but i can't figured it out how to convert xml file I get into .xowa file.

Can you make some more detail instructions how to do it? Thank you.123.18.26.130 (talk) 06:59, 27 April 2016 (UTC)

Hi! Good to hear from you again. Just so you know, I added the other Wikia extensions (NewWindowLink, Tabber, TabView) to v3.4.3. I forgot to leave a note here as as reminder.

Regarding Android, there isn't an easy way to convert the XOWA desktop wikis for reading on Android. This is because XOWA Android only works with XOWA HTML dumps; XOWA Desktop works with XOWA Wikitext dumps (from the xml). I've been building these XOWA HTML dumps one-by-one for Android

With that said, here are the options:

  • Try to build your wikia HTML dump on your own. This requires running some command-line scripts. See http://xowa.org/home/wiki/Dev/Command-line/Dumps.html . If you have any questions, ask here, and I'll assist.
  • Wait a few weeks for me to add a "build for Android" button. I'm hoping it should be an "easy" thing to convert the command-line script to a single button. I'm in the middle of a few different things now, so I won't be able to get to it until sometime in May
  • Wait a few months for me to get XOWA Android to read the XOWA Desktop dumps. This could be difficult. The final result may also be "slow" as parsing Wikitext is computationally expensive (lua/tidy) and Android is generally a weaker platform.

Let me know if you have any questions. Thanks for the interest! gnosygnu 02:31, 28 April 2016 (UTC)
