Conflict of interest
[edit]Hello Hamspec. If you are affiliated with some of the people, places or things you have written about on Wikipedia, you may have a conflict of interest. In keeping with Wikipedia's neutral point of view policy, edits where there is a conflict of interest, or where such a conflict might reasonably be inferred, are strongly discouraged. If you have a conflict of interest, you should avoid or exercise great caution when:
- editing or creating articles related to you, your organization, or its competitors, as well as projects and products they are involved with;
- participating in deletion discussions about articles related to you, your organization or its competitors; and
- linking to the Wikipedia article or website of your organization in other articles (see Wikipedia:Spam).
Please familiarize yourself with relevant policies and guidelines, especially those pertaining to neutral point of view, verifiability of information, and autobiographies.
For information on how to contribute to Wikipedia when you have a conflict of interest, please see our frequently asked questions for organizations. Thank you.Clovis Sangrail (talk) 04:13, 31 October 2011 (UTC)
Editing wikipedia
[edit]Hi, to cover a couple of your queries:
- Everyone is encouraged to edit wikipedia from an account that represents themselves. Group accounts or business accounts can't be assumed to be objective or disinterested parties and will typically be blocked.
- Any information that goes into wikipedia should meet sourcing requirements. While you may think something would be useful for others to know, if this can't be verified then there is know way for others to know whether its the truth or a fabrication (This also goes for usernames - an editor my have a name as an organisation, but there is no way to prove a connection).
- So yes, it would be best if you created a new username.
- & in relation to editing, if you want to include information, make sure the information is relevant to the page you're editing (Eg. Information about Hamilton should not be replicated in the article about its newspaper) and make sure the information is verifiable and encyclopedic (eg. 'Providing the best and most comprehensive' news is seen as wp:peacock term)
- Information more relevant to a local paper would be things like eg. circulation or notabale stories that have been picked up nationally.
- Also, promotional or spam editing as against the basic tenets of wikipedia, and you could be blocked from editing for this.
- There is more information re. editing in the welcome at the start of this page.
