Your user page and personal information
[edit]Hi Jasonkresch! I want to start off by welcoming you to Wikipedia. I'm glad you're here and I hope that you take off your jacket and stay with us for awhile. :-)
I wanted to talk to you about your user page. I saw that you added your name, as well as links to your personal social media profiles and other pages across the internet about you. I highly recommend that you do not add any kind of private information like this to your user page. It can open yourself up to harassment, being "doxxed" (having your address, phone number, and other private information found and posted online), as well as other kinds of very bad things. This kind of harassment is an extremely stressful situation for those who become victims, and once you post your personal information online somewhere, it's usually impossible to take it back.
I went ahead and removed this personal information from your user page and suppressed those edits. I did this in order to allow yourself a chance to read this message, become aware of these risks and take time to reflect on this, and to consciously make a decision as to whether or not you want to really post that information. As of right now, if you decide not to put it back, the information you added is suppressed and cannot be accessed or viewed by anyone outside of the oversight team, and you won't be at any risk for harassment. However, if you do decide to put it back, you do so freely at your own will, and despite the caution I gave you here about doing so. I obviously can't make you do anything; I just wanted to warn you about what can happen should you choose to post your private information here.
Please let me know if you have any questions, and I'll be happy to answer them and help you with anything I can. :-) Again, welcome to Wikipedia! We're glad to have you as part of our community! :-) Best regards - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 06:55, 27 January 2024 (UTC)
- Hi Oshwah, I appreciate the warning. I was careful to only post information that was already publicly available. Is there any reason that public profile links ought not be included in wikipedia? As it is my username gives away my name, perhaps it should be deleted too? Jasonkresch (talk) 07:04, 27 January 2024 (UTC)
- Sorry for the late reply! If you wish to, you can request you username be changed. Just go here for the instructions on how to request this. It's not that what you did was disallowed; you did nothing wrong by posting what you posted. I removed it in order to give you a chance to think about it first. I've dealt with and assisted many users who have been doxxed, outed, harassed, and... really, just left feeling really frightened. It's not a fun place or situation to be in; I figured I would use my fair judgment and do what I felt was the right thing so that you might avoid problems with this in the future. You're welcome to put your information back; I can't and won't stop you. However, it's part of my duties and responsibilities to make sure that editors in this community are safe. That's why I did what I did. :-) Please let me know if you have more questions or concerns, and I'll be more than happy to help you. :-) Cheers - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 04:44, 30 January 2024 (UTC)
