Early career Born in Pontiac to Michigander parents Jerry Painter and Mandi Hughes, who is currently a lecturer at Waterford Kettering, his family lives in the United States. Coming from a member of a family of intellectuals from near Pontiac in Michigan.

So the wrestling body decided fight fans would be more likely to embrace a wrestler from the land of The TNA Superstar Rhyno.

Hughes enrolled at Waterford Kettering.

He made his Backyard debut in 2003.[5] He competed primarily in the Waterford area, including stints in the IWF (WWX) under the ring name Mr.Sexy.

2005 was also his first exposure to the main WWX roster, when he worked dark matches on March 5 and 26 before episodes of WWX Thursday Thrashing against Branden Welch and Gingerkid respectively. For these appearances he used the ring name Kofi Jamaica. When he returned he used his original ring name to J.J. Hughes, and continued to use both ring names throughout his duration there.That May he also worked house shows, defeating Ballsrotten in Waterford, Michigan on the 5th and Diablo Ortiz in Pontiac, Michigan on the 6th.

Hughes worked there for most of the remainder of the year,until he was called up to the main WWX roster.

Thursday Thrashing brand A series of vignettes for Hughes's Internet debut began airing on the weekly Thursday Thrashing Internet show starting on May 16, 2008.[18] view During this introduction phase the videos, official WWx website, and the WWX commentators all made note that he would be the Third Pontiac-born person to wrestle for the company. He debuted on January 22, 2003 with a win over local wrestler Diablo Ortiz.After wrestling sporadic matches, Hughes was involved in a major 24-man battle royal during the Xtremeamania IV pre-show with the winner receiving an WWX Championship match, but was eliminated by Branden Welch.[21] Hughes remained undefeated in singles competition in Thrusday Thrashing for months and was placed in to a feud with The Freakshow Branden Welch at the end of April 2008. After two straight losses, Welch got a win over Hughes on the May 20 episode of Thursday Thrashing,[22] though their feud continues.
