Sacred Heart Primary School

Sacred Heart Catholic Primary School, St Albans, was built in 1954 to cater for the

children of many post-war migrants who had settled in the area. As various areas of St

Albans were developed, a number of new parishes were formed. Fr John O’Reilly,

who has been Parish Priest of Sacred Heart Parish since 1972, has been instrumental in

these developments.

Sacred Heart/Emmaus Parish is one parish, with two churches and three parish schools:

Sacred Heart, St Albans, Emmaus, Sydenham and Cana, Hillside which opened in 2004.

Sacred Heart parish also has two high school campuses; Catholic Regional College, St

Albans and Catholic Regional College in Sydenham.

SCHOOL DESCRIPTION

Sacred Heart Catholic Primary School is located in the disadvantaged area of St Albans

which is in the western region of Melbourne. It is a parish school which caters primary

education to a multicultural mix of students from a predominantly low socio-economic

background. There are about 300 students in this school and many of these are financially

supported by the parish of Sacred Heart, St Albans. This school’s particular emphasis on

literacy and numeracy has reaped successful rewards in the high rate of achievement in the

students’ literacy and numeracy levels.\

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION The Religious Education Curriculum is reflected in the entire life of the school. This includes specific Religious Education lessons provided for the children as part of their regular classroom program. One of the main aims of the Religious Curriculum is to help children understand that being Catholic is a way of life, not just a subject studied at school. Sacred Heart School uses the Guidelines for Religious Education provided by the Melbourne Catholic Archdiocese together with a school-based Religious Education Program.

The school-based Religious Education program encompasses a family sacramental program which operates jointly with Emmaus and Cana schools. There is also a weekly school Mass attended by staff and students.
