Zora Neale HurstonKcoke2 (talk) 20:01, 25 September 2015

These are all good possible topics, Kcoke2. I do suggest you work a bit on your Wikipedia linking and formatting. You haven't added the heading "Topics" as required here. Part of the purpose of this assignment was to see if you could use basic Wikipedia editing features, like headings. In this case, you should have added a heading that looks like this:

Topics[edit]

Notice also that you've linked "America" to Claude McKay's page. I understand that there probably isn't a page for that particular poem, but it is still confusing to wikilink to something that doesn't seem related to the text used for he link. Also, you only need to sign off and add a time stamp once when you add content to your talk page. I'm only really interested in seeing if you know how to add a signature, and I ned that time stamp to get a general idea of when you posted your work.

Now, so far as your topics go, I recommend going with either Hurston or McKay. There is still so much more that could be said about those authors and their works! If you choose one of those authors, you might even have the opportunity to make a new article. I'm surprised that no article exists for Hurston's essay "How it Feels to Be Colored Me," for example, and there are likely entire collections of McKay's works that have not been added to Wikipedia yet. You could also probably add extensively to the existing articles that exist for works by these authors, or add links and make corrections to the information already here. Poe will also work for you, but you're less likely to find solid ways to really contribute to the information here on such a well known story. You might end up getting frustrated; however you are welcome to pursue any of these options! Nadinecross78 (talk) 18:01, 5 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

List of Contributions[edit]

on Zora Neale Hurston

• There is not a wiki link to Hurston's essay "How It Feels to Be Colored Me" under the section Selected Bibliography, I will try to create a page for that essay.

• In the section Adulthood it seemed really short, maybe if I can find a bit more information her adulthood I will add it in that section.

• In the Literary Career there is not information about Zora after 1952 and she died in 1960. So I would like to find more information on either of her or any of her works that she done before she died.

Kcoke2, This is a great start on what you can do with the article for Zora Neale Hurston. It still needs a surprising amount of work for such a well known writer! Now, this list is a bit vague. I know that you want to add an entire article for "How it Feels to be Colored Me." This will take a ton of work, and may be the only contribution you make, You 'll need to spend more time determining what kind of information goes in an article on a famous say. I recommend you look for other articles on essays to get a good idea of what sort of information is included them. So far as your other edits, I agree that some information is missing from the Adulthood section, and the final years of Hurston's life. Unfortunately, this is because we simply don't know what Hurston was doing during those years; after some personal setbacks she died in poverty and obscurity, and was largely forgotten until Alice Walker recovered her legacy. The "Legacy and Honors" section actually includes some pretty solid information about what we do know about her later years. However, it occurs to me that this information belongs under her "Biography," and not in her "Legacy" section. So, in addition to adding an article for the essay, you might consider re-organizing the information in her article to be more logical. Nadinecross78 (talk) 21:01, 30 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Summary[edit]

On Zora Neale Hurston wiki page I will create an article for her famous story 'How it Feels to be Colored Me" because there is no wiki link for that under the section selected bibliography. The section on adulthood for Zora was rather short I was going to look around for more information that may be relevant for others to know. Also, under the section biography I want to see if I can include some information about Zora after 1952 of any of her work or of any work any one else has recovered of her legacy after she died. I will also re-organize the information in her article to make it more logical.

Kcoke2, your general summary is good, but I'm concerned you aren't quite sure yet how much work the proposed edits will entail. What will you include in the new article about the essay? What information will you re-organize in the {{Zora Neale Hurston]] article? These specifics are what tell me that you understand the scope of your project and are ready to begin editing. Also, I don't look like you've posted your proposed edits to the article Talk page for Hurston, as required here. be sure to do this so other editors can help you! Annotated Bibliography[edit]

Ducille, Ann (2003). Ann Ducille: Looking for Zora. New York Times

This article, which I found on the New York Times website, which describes and goes into detail about how people felt about her published work. This source is valuable to me in my Wikipedia project because I feel it very important for people to know how readers responded to her most famous work "How it Feels to be Colored Me". I will use this information in my edit by placing the information I read about in this article under literary career. This source helps me understand that although her piece was famous outsiders still had a lot to say about it, negative and bad. This is very much like my other sources because they all have the same idea of trying to get more information that is left out or still to be researched. This is scholarly because it came from a reliable newspaper.

Heard, Matthew (2007). Matthew Heard: "Dancing is Dancing NO matter who is Doing it" Zora Neale Hurston, Literacy, and Contemporary Writing Pedagogy. EBSCO

This article, which I found on the UIS databases, goes into detail about recognizing her as a model for her study in composition curriculum. Students who read this article might develop a strategy and theory for the diverse society from Zora Neale Hurston's view. I will also add this in the literary career. This source is valuable to me for this project because it will give others a chance to see someone else do a study on her from a different point of view that others may not even be aware of. This is very much like my other sources because they all have the same idea of trying to get more information that is not available on her talk page. This is scholarly because it came from the UIS database which is very reliable.

Itzkoff, Dave (2012). Dave, Itzkoff: Artsbeat, Hurston Novel to be a Radio Play. New York Times

This article, I found from New York Times website, this article describes when the 75th anniversary was celebrated for one of Hurston's other famous pieces "There Eyes Are Watching God" and they taped performances to the story. This is valuable because it talks about something exciting that people put together for what they thought was a very outstanding and famous piece to make a performance of it. I will use this information under posthumous recognition. This helps me understand that Zora Neale Hurston was indeed a very famous recognized author. This is very much like my other sources because they all have the same idea of trying to get more information that is not available on her talk page. This is scholarly because it came from a reliable newspaper.

Johnson, Patrick (2009). Patrick Johnson: Poor "Black" Theatre. EBSCO

I found this article from the UIS library database on EBSCO, this article goes into detail about black resistance to oppression as shown in the works of authors such as Zora Neale Hurston herself. This is valuable to my Wikipedia project because it talks about what most are probably skeptical to bring up, and I will put this information in posthumous recognition as well. This source helps me understand that black theatre is something that is very amazing I feel and there is so much put into really getting the audience to feel like they are right on stage with you. This is scholarly because it came from the reliable databases of UIS library website. This is very much like my other sources because they all have the same idea of trying to get more information that is not available on her talk page.

Kcoke2, these sources all sound like they will work for you, and I'm glad you're learning more about this important American author. This essay isn't her "most famous work," however -- that would be her novel Their Eyes Were Watching God. I do have some concerns here about your ability to distinguish scholarly from non-scholarly sources. Newspaper articles aren't scholarly, and the other sources you have here aren't necessarily scholarly just because you found them through a UIS database. You've lucked out in that Heard's and Johnson's articles are scholarly, but that's because they were published in peer reviewed journals. I had to look up this information to verify it, since your citations are missing large amounts of information. Make sure that you understand what must be listed in the references you use on Wikipedia for your entries so that they aren't removed by others. For newspapers, include the full publication date and access date, for example, and for journal articles you must include the name of the journal, as well as the volume, issue, and page numbers. Hello, Kcoke2. I wanted to let you know that I’m proposing an article that you started, How it feels to be colored me, for deletion because I don't think it meets our criteria for inclusion. If you don't want the article deleted:

  1. edit the page
  2. remove the text that looks like this: {{proposed deletion/dated...}}
  3. save the page

Also, be sure to explain why you think the article should be kept in your edit summary or on the article's talk page. If you don't do so, it may be deleted later anyway.

You can leave a note on my talk page if you have questions. Pixarh (talk) 16:54, 9 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
