Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs was developed by Abraham Maslow. Abraham Maslow was the child of Jewish immigrants and the oldest of seven children. He developed this learning theory by studying and observing monkeys and discovering that the monkeys had a priority on their individual needs. (1) He gave the monkeys choices between two items and the monkeys would choose the item that they needed the most. When given a choice between food and water, the monkeys most often chose water. These monkeys were always less aggressive that the other group that had food and no water. When all the basic needs were met, the monkeys were less aggressive and moved on to achieving other needs in their lives.(1) Maslow moved his trials to humans and discovered the same results. The order of needs that humans prioritized were physiological needs, safety needs, belongingness and love needs, esteem needs, and self actualization needs. Physiological needs are the first needs in the hierarchy of needs triangle. They are the basic needs that a person needs to satisfy to live. These needs are classified as hunger, bodily functions, and thirst. Physiological needs are satisfied by cravings that a person has. If a person is hungry, they should eat to satisfy their hunger. If they are thirsty, they should quench their thirst by drinking something. By doing all of this, the person is maintaining a homeostatic balance in their body. Safety needs are the need to feel safe and secure and to know that you can depend on someone when you need them. (2)Belongingness and love needs are when an individual wants to build relationships with other people and feel like they are wanted and belong. Esteem needs are next and they are how the person feels about their self. Esteem needs can help determine how successful a person is or if they will become a failure. Self actualization is the last need that a person can achieve. This is when a person can take more steps to make their self better because they have reached all of their basic needs.(3) Maslow’s Hierarchy of needs basically says that an individual must achieve the most basic needs that their body desires before moving on to other needs that will make them feel better psychologically.
