Is the deep scattering layer throughout the entire mesopelagic?
More info on the Malaspina Circumnavigation Expedition?
Maybe in the oxygen section talk about hypoxic environments as well, that lie on the border of the oxygen min. zone--I know it's a place where a lot of organisms like to hang out.
I like how you show that oxygen and nitrogen are often coupled rxns.
Could maybe explain why denitrification and occurs (most energy acquired through nitrate when oxygen depleted).
The squid/bioluminescence sentences in the last paragraph of your metazoan ecology section seems a bit out of place. Maybe there is a better place to put it?
I don't think you need to define a term in parentheses (see bioaccumulation and biomagnification) if you linked them
Be careful not to speculate too much when talking about human impacts. This section needs to be cited diligently to avoid bias.
Overall, great article! I think the outline works well in order of importance. It flowed very smoothly.

I found it very helpful that you have included a section on physical conditions in the mesopelagic.
Physical conditions section is lacking little bit in details. In it you have written about acoustic effects that arise due to physical properties of water. Acoustics are the effect of physical conditions and not a part of physical conditions. I would have liked to read some description of vertical density stratification in the mesopelagic.
Rest of the article is well written. I find the flow of the article will be improved greatly if one of you goes through it and modifies sentence structures so that the article seems like it is written by one individual.
A great article an addition to wikipedia.
