Personal correspondence is not a reliable source because it cannot be verified, which is a requirement. Because of that, it is considered original research. (And who is this personal correspondence from anyway? Mangin's descendants?} You're going to need to provide a citation from a reliable source to change the information from the Koeppel book. Hi, I am a direct descendant from Mangin and I have all the original correspondence between himself and his family while he was away. These letters are intended to remain private and therefore will not be shared as source on wikipedia. I am directly in touch with G. Koeppel who recognized there were some mistakes in his book, due to the fact that he took the best knowledge on JFM that was available at the time he wrote it. If people can present a reliable source saying he left with his wife to St Domingue (e.g. a french wedding certificate dated before 1794) then I'm fine leaving the info as it is. But it will never happen as he got married in NYC at a later date.
Same if people can prove with facts that he didn't want to go back to France because of the revolution: what is supporting this ? It's all fiction, and it's not because it's in Koeppel's book that it's true. Thank you for your understanding. TL.
