Irish names

[edit]

Please stop changing English language place names to Irish language names. This is the English language Wikipedia. If there is an Anglicised version of a name that is in use we use that in preference to any native language names. This is true of all place names. The Official Languages act in Ireland specifies that in Gaeltacht areas the Irish language placename should always be used. Using anglicised versions of these placenames is akin to insisting that Ceylon be used instead of Sri Lanka or insisting that Rhodesia rather than Zimbabwe. Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe are the official names in English, and the common names so the comparison is completely wrong. Anyway Wikipedia is not based in Ireland and isn't subject to the Official Languages Act in another country. Wikipedia policy is to use the common Anglicised name if there is one in preference to a native name due to the fact that this is the English language Wikipedia, not the Irish Wikipedia.
