Perry Index
[edit]Thanks for spotting typos in the list derived from Perry's work, but please note that if you want to make other changes they should be in line with what is in Perry's own book, not someone else's website. Sweetpool50 (talk) 08:59, 6 September 2024 (UTC)
- Thanks for the guidance, Sweetpool50! I clearly have a lot to learn on the editing side, even though I've been reading the site daily for close to 20 years. This is my first feeble attempt at editing, so thanks for your patience. I'm glad someone is checking this carefully.
- I did not realise that this page was based on a book (although that makes perfect sense). Could we add the reference to Perry's book in the Notes? I see that Pete unseth also asked for it last year. Llude (talk) 15:10, 9 September 2024 (UTC)
As it turns out, the changes you made were not even as the titles appear in the website you quoted, so your edit summary was untrue and your edits were WP:OR. Do be more careful in future or you'll get the reputation of being untrustworthy. Sweetpool50 (talk) 08:31, 7 September 2024 (UTC)
- I made two sets of changes:
- - I fixed three typos (Spier -> Spider, Bostom -> Bosom, the his -> his Ugly). Not knowing about the book, I used the mythfolklore.net website to figure out what those should be. In retrospect I should not have introduced the word "Ugly" in the third fix as this might not be in the book (to which I don't have access).
- - I changed the capitalisation to make it self-consistent -- not consistent with the mythfolklore.net website as such. Here I followed basic English style guides when it comes to the capitalisation of book or story titles, which tend to capitalise all nouns, pronouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs. The earlier sections of the page followed this style while the later sections did not, which is what I wanted to fix. I did not change any of the words.
- Should the capitalisation also reflect what was written in Perry's book? It seems like a style choice to me, but I'm keen to hear your opinion. Llude (talk) 15:23, 9 September 2024 (UTC)
- I just realised that I also did not capitalise pronouns as I stated above, and not every verb, so the style was not as consistent as it should be anyway... Glad we are starting over :-) Llude (talk) 15:35, 9 September 2024 (UTC)
- Thanks very much for pointing out the dangers of slipping in unintended words and meanings. I'll definitely take that to heart. Llude (talk) 15:24, 9 September 2024 (UTC)
- As I said above, it's Ben Perry's index, a recognised scholarly source, and should not be altered. The Aesopica site that is reliant on it is generally trustworthy; whoever the editor was who created the WP article on the index might not have been. If you spot obvious typos there, a change would be justified, but not the introduction of your own style choices. Sweetpool50 (talk) 16:43, 9 September 2024 (UTC)
- Thanks very much for the clarification! I've actually gotten hold of a copy of the academic source by Perry and will edit the page accordingly if that's OK. I've also ascertained that the original revision of this page was based on the Aesopica site and not the academic source. Llude (talk) 19:09, 9 September 2024 (UTC)
- (and both this page and the Aesopica site differ from the academic source in minor ways such as capitalisation...) Llude (talk) 19:36, 9 September 2024 (UTC)

Happy editing in future! I'm impressed that you managed to get hold of Perry to compare. It's just the fable list that is useful in this case; some of his theorising isn't, notably his dismissal of the idea of independent Eastern equivalents. Sweetpool50 (talk) 20:56, 9 September 2024 (UTC)
