Punctuation in ASCII Reference to EBCDIC

[edit]

I'm not going to pass comment on the relative timings of ASCII and EBCDIC, but, if you re-revert the removal of the reference to EBCDIC could you please reword it to make it clear that the "8 bit" is in apposition to EBCDIC, not to the teleprinter code. I'd suggest putting the comma separated clause in parentheses, instead.

The reason for suggesting this is that there is a USENet thread where someone has managed to convince themselves that ASCII is really an 8 bit code as a result. In part this is because of the popular mis-use of ASCII (and I think, ANSI, although that's a different issue).
