This article offers a guide for Nurses on how to care for children and young people and meet their essential needs. It highlights the importance of delivering care that is safe and in line with this it is always preferable for children to be treated by healthcare professionals who specialise in the care of children, rather than those who only deliver care to children on an occasional basis. In addition to this care needs to be age appropriate to the child and meet their physical and emotional needs. Vital to providing safe and age appropriate care is that any equipment used is approved for paediatric use and that children and young people have access to age appropriate toys and recreation.
The article goes on to discuss the methods on keeping children and their families/carers informed about their treatment such as by having access to verbal and written information, and that children should be prepared for non emergency treatment and hospital admissions by being giving prior information either at the GP Surgery, in the home or at an appropriate pre-assessment clinic. With regards to the families of children the hospital should provide accommodation either at the child’s bedside or close by so that parents/carers can remain with their child for the duration of their hospital stay.
